The 325e refers to the eta engine, a high torque, economy engine. The 325i has more horsepower, but is not as economical.

the e or just plain old 325 (from 87) has the 2.7 which redlines at 5000. The 2.5 that spins to 6500 produces more horsepower. The i has different ratios and is overall a much quicker and less efficiant car. As an owner of the 325e I'm pleased with the wide powerband of the engine, and still has plenty of power for screwing around (but I thought cops like doughnuts?). The 325is has the power to break the rear end loose around those hard turns, even at speed. The e30 has exceptional handling and I love the dynamics of the posi rear end. All things considered, I would take the i over the e. Unless that is someone made the 2.7 i out of both engines (could it rev to 6500?)
