96 3.2 Rodeo weird stuff

My sisters 3.2 Rodeo is acting a little weird. After driving for about 20-30 min. its starts to stumble and then dies. I have changed the fuel filter (http://www.isuzuforums.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=850&PN=1&TPN=1#), plugs, wires, checked fuel pressure. The check engine light is on, and around here, diagnostics cost a fortune. I have a sneaky suspicion that its the EGR. I also am considering breaking it open and throwing a timing belt on there with a new tensioner. Any help on this problem would be appreciated even though I know I am being vague.

If you have an Autozone, Advance or Schucks or similar type auto parts store, they usually can read your trouble codes for free.

We only have a NAPA and a Carquest here.

Sounds like it could be EGR valve or the control solenoid holding the valve open when it's not supposed to be. But, you really need to have the codes scanned. You can usually buy a cheapy code scanner.

throwing parts at it costs even more. as suggested get a reader of your own and you will be ahead of the game, although a thoroughly cheapo one may not be the way to go from what i've read.

without the codes, which you really need to get, concentrate on what is affected by temperature increases, since it takes so long to happen. i get that this is regular routine, right? does it start up again right away after it dies? or does it take some waiting time?

you see, this could be almost anything (except the things you've mentioned, imo, like timing belt, egr etc.). some candidates i would suggest are ignition coils and/or ignition module (from personal experience), 02sensor circuit, circuits and systems that work from input of coolant temp sensor, alternator/battery, etc etc etc. now you can trace all those things down and troubleshoot and test, or you can get a reader and get a real head start (that's what they are for, of course)
good luck. i'm looking to hear what you come up with

104k on the clock. I was thinking EGR because it acts like a Vacuum leak. It does happen at operating temp. It does not crank immediatly, it takes about 5 minutes. Alternator and battery are brand new. Heres the best way I can put it. Drive for about 20, hit the gas and it stumbles very bad, once you let off its idles and then it dies. Very hard to crank after that but it will eventually. Its not constant, its intermittant.

Are you using the same gas station?

Have you ever replaced the O2's?

Just wondering if you picking up bad gas. That likely-hood of frequently though would only be if you were using the same gas station.

How long has she owned it, any history??

She's owned it for about 18 months now, and theres was a clean report and no documentation of previous repairs.

Did the check engine light come on before or after you replaced the spark plugs? And which brand did you use?

It came on before I changed the plugs. I used NGK Platnum plugs PFR6G-11 was the part number.
