I just got a grand am yesturday and already wanting to replace the stock stereo with my kenwood sound system. I called today to see about the wiring harness. I was told that there is a special harness you have to buy. The harness runs $80. I am wondering if anyone has the wiring schematics. Can you re route the wires without using the existing stereo? Or do I have to spend the money on the modular they want to buy? Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Troy

I was just hoping to avoid having to spend over 100 bucks to install my stereo. Would rather spend that much elsewhere in the car. new dash speakers or something..... But if I have to do a harness I will. The stereo just will not be going on to soon.

Welcome to AF microwaiv.
If you want less troubles get the cable/harness.
Which stereo does you GA have now ?
Was that harness from the dealer or some other stereo outlet.
The stealerships are pricey :grinyes:
I'd check audio outlets for that cable or on the net like crutchfield.com.
They might even have an online wire diagram

its just a standard stereo in it. I called our local stereo shop for the harness. I also called Best Buy and they wanted $120 for the harness. I checked prices online and they were also running the same price of about 80 bucks.
Guess the soundsystem is gonna have to wait for a bit.

If you had a wire diagram and like to hack up your wiring,
you could for less.
If thiers one out for your 04',
$15-20 should buy you a cheap haynes manual,
it'll have what wires are what with color codes and everything.

All I did for my 98 GA GT 3.1 was go to walmart and purchase a wiring harness. You plugged it into the car's wire harness and then wired it to the wiring harness that comes with your stereo. It was 10 bux. Unless you want quality I guess. It was cheap and practical

I didnt know walmart would have anythign like this. Did you still have to buy the dash kit or was that part of what you paid the 50 for??? I talked to someone at a wholesale house i live clost to and the one they have for like 40-50 comes with the actual dash mount as well.

I have seen kits at walmarts and they come with a few plastic parts that take up all that space and help mount it.
A universal type harness though so sometimes wires need moved on the pin connector in the plug to match the stereo output.
You get what you pay for too.
Those $120 are pricey but usually match up and have better hardware, IMO.
Good Hunting!

theres no way thwe wireing harness would cost that much there prolly charging you for the harness to keep the door chimes and what not. the regular wireing harness just for the aftermarket radio should cost no more than 30 bux thats including tax.

I called a wholesale place today. I can get my harness for 60 that keeps the door chimes and other things that would be cut off by taking out factory stereo. The antenna adapter is like 4 and my dash kit is 8. My other big exspense will be the amp kit. 4 guage wire is gonna cost me 20. So all in all 100 bucks to put in a stereo... Thats just crazy since I have 500 in the deck, amp and subs... LOL

is it just the door chimes that it stops or is there other functions as well?
Another question is what the hell all comes off to get the stereo out. I was looking and I see NO SCREWS OR CLIPS to be taken out to remove that molding around the stereo.

it should not effect your chimes. That comes from the body control module, which is under the glove box. I put tape over the holes so its not as loud and anoying.
You need a panel tool or something to pry offff the bezel.
Just some clips on th eback side holding it.
Here is a section in the appearance/non performance section.

Kinda cheesy but it has a few pics.

Well got all my wires and harness and got my deck installed. It was a kickass install that took about 2 hours to install deck and the amplifier and sub in the trunk. Thanks for the help in figuring out what exactly it was I needed to do.
