gas cap door release

I have always had a problem with the cable sticking, and efforts to lube it have never been successful. I finally just cut the end off (at lever) and pulled the cable out from the rear. It appears that the cable casing must have a pinch in it some were (about 2' back from front lever).
I've crawled around under the KIA, but can not locate the casing.
Question is - anyone have a idea where the casing runs? Or how I might go about finding the pinch? Or any other thoughtful suggestions.
Much appreciated.
Plan B is to abandon the cable release, and put some sort of friction catch on the door.

Just came back to the forum to review some posts...got some issues of my own xqqme2day (where do you come up with these names?). I don't know if you even care anymore about your fuel door issue; but for those that do, the cable runs inside the car. I have a sportage convertible and the cable runs across the back deck under the carpet and toward the drivers seat. It appears the cable gets damaged where it is placed under the back passenger seat floor carpet behind the driver. If you replace the cable, reroute it more toward the transmission hump so it doesn't get mashed by the passengers feet.
