possible engine issue

I just got my car back from my mechanic. I had the valve cover job done about 6 months ago and was still seeing oil burning on the pass. side of the engine and they relplaced that side again and said all of the plugs and boots looked good. I told the mechanic that I had been getting a spike in my temp gauge and to check what the cause could be. He said that the coolant looked a little low and that he suspected that I could have engine issues since he thought that there was water or some other substance in my oil. Is this an acutal cylinder head issue. Please, any help would be appreciated??

so - he thiinks it was not tightened properly or they kinked the valve cover gasket when they put it on last time? very possible that a small leak allows oil onto the header and that was your burning oil... but the last gasket job should have fixed it.

Did he change the oil? Seems any mexhanic that 'saw' a subatance in your oil would have been worried - it's not a good thing if it's true. Normally, it would be a leaky head gasket which would allow coolant to slip out of the cooling ducts and into the combustion areas.

There have not been many reports of head gasket failure on LSes.

I am going to bring it back and have them change the oil and take a look at what it looks like. When I have checked oil in the past it looked normal but maybe I need to see all of it from a change. I did have a change done at the dealer about 3K ago and they did not say anything was wrong to me. This is not the dealer this time but a local guy. It is a 2000 V8 w/ 75K. I guess once I figure out what is in the oil I'll know what to do next.
