I needed to use my horns in an emergency tonight. No response when buttons pushed.Where do I start to look for the source of the problem. Is there a flow chart? Ta.

have you tried the fuses? That'd be the first place to look when anything on the car cuts out. If it doesn't have a fuse, then look to see if the power wires to the horn are connected. Once they were disconnected on my car for some odd reason...the conclusion I came to was they rattled off and the horn worked again.
I have no idea where the horn is located...

Thanks. The fuse seems to be intact.I have no idea where the horns are situated either.Do you know if there is a relay that may be faulty?Although my fusebox names the fuses it does not name the included relays.I have ordered a pair of Hella Compact horns in case the horn/s is/are themselves faulty. In any case the sound of the original horns was pathetically weak.

Well, I can't garantee you that this is the fault, but that may be your problem if the horn was pretty week to begin with...it might have just kicked the bucket!
try this web site:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do
you can either enter in the last seven digits of your VIN number, then on the underneath that form, there's a link to browse the parts that are specific for your model and you might be able to locate where your horn is.
But before you go off and get lost in the long list of parts and catagories, I found it for ya... The little diagram in the corner of the picture depicts where the horn is.
