I drive a 99 grand am 2.4 - 2 door. Last night I drive home, turn on the signal light, the light comes on and it makes that ticking noise, but when I turn it off the ticking noise stays on, the signal light is off so its just the ticking noise. Its a lot faster than the regular ticking noise when you use the signal light, and its completly random even when parked, or driving, it comes and goes and its driving me crazy. Somebody must know how to solve this, all the advice i,ve got here so far has worked. Thanks in advance for any information.

It could be a couple things, your hazzard switch which it also has the relay built in.
Or the multi function switch(MFS) on the steering coloumn has dirty contacts shorting out and or it is broken.
I'd first check the related fuses though.
Then have the hazzard switch tested.
Hope that helps.
Oh, and Let me know what you find.

Thanks for the info.
I was thinking it was a loose wire on the MFS (controls for the signal lights), but I,ll check the fuses. do u have any idea how to check the contacts or wire for the MFS. Thanks a lot I,ll let you know how it goes.

so all the fuses are fine, I,m sure its some loose connection, because today it barely ticked at all only the occasional tick. How do I go about taking apart the control switch for the signal lights. Any help at all would be appreciated. Thank you.

Thiers 3 torq screws in the bottom of the plastic part surrounding the multi function switch(MFS).
First remove the Air Bag fuse !
The MFS is one piece, turn sig/headlights and the wiper control.
Then thier is a screw on top of the MFS unit.
Unplug the 3 connectors.
Lift the front up and slowly remove.
Sometimes the conntacts are dirty and a cleaning of the dirt/debrie will eliminate the clicking.
Just becarefull because thier are 2 springs that can pop out, you need those, so dont loose them.
hope that helps!

by what you described in the front of the thread I thought for sure you were on the right track with multifunction switch ... then I read this statement & I'm not so sure ... change out the turn signal relay (flasher), put in a heavy duty one (note: there's usually 2 flashers, 1. turn signals 2. 4-way-flashers). I'm only guessing this because you say its slowing down & barely ticking ... sounds like the same thing that happened when mine went out, its like a $10 part, and even if it hasn't went bad it was going to, so your a step ahead of the car ... I think your flashers are in the same spot mine were ... under the dash, drivers side, between the brake pedal & fuse box, clipped to the dash support. Turn on one or the other & follow the sound.

Not on his 99'. The relay is part of the hazzard switch, but when the contacts or the MFS is bad it will do wierd things like he explained. All other relays are in the fuse boxs.
