Tach problems

Transport SE 3.1 - 1990 model.
Running well, but the tachograph needle has started acting up.
Even at idle the needle jumps from 0 - 2000rpm and when driving the needle is anywhere between 1000 - 4000rpm and then it settles down for a while before acting up again.
The van has had a new ignition coil, ignition module and pick-up coil fitted in the last 6 months so they should not be the cause of the malfunction.
I have checked the connections at the coil and distributor and all appears well.
If the tach stops working full stop then I can live without but its a bit disconcerting to see the needle jumping around when driving.
Anyone got any ideas?:)
