But a 500bhp, 4.8 litre V10 hybrid. Oxymoron much?

The Supra is back! Believe it or not this silver machine is Toyota's all-new performance flagship, a hybrid-powered rival to coupes such as Nissan's new GT-R.

Replacing the firm's famous sports car - which disappeared from Toyota's line-up in 1996 - the new model will go on sale in 2008, and takes styling inspiration from luxury brand Lexus' forthcoming LF-A.

But while that car will use a 500bhp 4.8-litre V10 when it arrives in 2009, Toyota's new model gets a tweaked version of the Lexus GS450h's 341bhp 3.5-litre V6 hybrid powertrain, giving it a unique combination of performance and economy.

With rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed sequential auto, the supercar should cover the 0-60mph sprint in less than five seconds and hit a top speed in excess of 170mph, yet return 30mpg. The mach-ine has already been seen testing at the Nürburgring circuit in Germany.

A concept is scheduled to appear at the Detroit Motor Show in January, while the production version is expected to be priced to match Nissan's new GT-R.

Meanwhile, Toyota-owned Daihatsu has unveiled an electric variant of its Copen convertible at the EVS-22 electric car show in Tokyo. Fitted with lithium-ion batteries and a 30kW motor, the Copen EV has a top speed of 75mph and a range of 155 miles.

And Subaru, which is also part-owned by Toyota, revealed vanadium-oxide batteries which have twice the power of lithium-ion units and 10 times the life of the nickel-hydride ones used in the Toyota Prius.

I'll try to find more pics of it. The initial styling isn't too bad IMO, with some adjustments, she'll be beastly and it'll probally grow on me like the Evo X did.

I think it's pretty ugly IMO. I'm sure the 7 speed AUTO tranny will go over well too. With some tuning I'm sure it'll be a hoot at the drag strip... nice auto tranny for consistent runs and hybrid engineering for the environmentally conscious. Honestly though, how many Supra owners really care about mpg?

^True, seems like the wave of the future, I definitely wouldn't mind a 500bhp car if it still got 30mpg.

I know everybody thinks the looks are shitty, but whens the last time anybody looked at a concept and thought, "Damn that looks good".

I remember people where dissin the new GT-R's looks.

Settle down guys, it's just a concept.

I like how the design kinda harks back to the JZA80.

As for the V10/hybrid..fuckit, if it works, bring it on!

*edit* Actually, it seems the Lexus has the V10 and the Supra will have the V6/Hybrid thing going on.

I don't mind it aside from the back bumper, that thing just looks clunky and overall not sleek or sexy at all. Change the back bumper to something a little more slim, and that thing won't look bad.

I struggle to put into words my hatred of modern Toyota. They've gone for a long time without having a sports car. Even the Celica and the MR2 were killed off in recent years. How is it that the biggest (in terms of market capitalization) car company in the world doesn't have a single sports car?

Now it looks like they are about to have one... and they go ahead and ruin it. The Supra was loved as a tuner car and thats who most of the Toyota sports car enthusiasts are, tuners. Now they want to give us a two door rwd Prius. Sorry, but no thanks. Keep your automatic transmissions, I'll be sticking with BMW and Honda.

I think its halarious that the F1 team with (reportedly) the biggest budget of any team doesn't beat a single major manufacturer backed team. Even BMW-Sauber, a brand new team that lost one of their drivers and had to replace him with a rookie managed to beat Toyota.

Incase some of you havn't seen this yet, Lexus is coming out with an division to compete with BMW M, Audi S/SR, Merc AMG, and Cadillac V- it will be called "F." The first model will be called the IS-F.

Last thing I heard about the new Supra was that it was going to have an NA V6 with a little over 300 horsepower set to compete with the 350Z.

I believe it is saying the Supra will get the 341 hp engine. With 500 hp I would think it'd be 0-60 in much less than 5 seconds, and a higher speed than 170 mph.

how did they get name "hybrid" anyway. They run on gasoline period. No gas no go. The current crop of so called hybrids are all gasoline only vehicles with a few high tech tricks and batteries to extend their range and gas mileage. A hybrid should be defined as a crossbreed that uses more than one fuel source. None of the current hybrids match that definition. They run on gasoline only. Try running one without it.

if the video screens on the gas pumps showed the number of American soldiers being killed in Iraq and calculated your contribution to their deaths as you fueled up, maybe you'd get the message.

see here for a true hybrid: http://www.calcars.org/priusplus.html

for a high performance electric car go here for one that out performs the Supra, it is available now and looks a hell of a lot better than the Supra pictured: http://www.teslamotors.com/index.php?js_enabled=1

I liked that movie. Yea the Cien's one of the few concepts I can think of that were nice. It whooped ass in GT4 too. But concepts look so damn screwy these days it hard to base this Supra's looks off the actual product. I like the rear end, and the front end could look better with some more tweaks.

In defense of the design of the Supra replacement concept;
The strange chunky at the corners look is because the original Volta concept was designed around a motor on each corner design; to conceptually provide 4 wheel drive when/as neccessary. That Vlota concept was also the one that started the whole hybrid supercar idea which seems to have been translated by the press as meaning Supra. That is on top of the fact that most seem to have forgotten that they currently have 3 supercar designs in various stages of testing/design.

As far as I know, they are very careful about using the Supra name because they are aware of its associations.

Put it this way, considering that they have just dropped the Corolla name after god knows how many years and its past successes in WRC in the godly hands of Carlos Sainz, it's not likely that they will just use the Supra name lightly.
