I have a 2001 Z71 and have had little problems out of it. I've taken it to the dealership twice to have them tell me that the TPS sensor and Fuel gauge sending unit are no good and that they are not covered under my warranty. I replaced the TPS sensor and havent worried about the fuel gauge since it works 95% of the time. It just drops to E when you fill it up. Now that my truck's warranty has just ran out and the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light has came on, I don't want to take it to the dealership to have them charge me $50 to hookup there machine. Where and what can you buy to do this yourself? I have checked out the autoxray.com website and they have a scanner for $80. Is it worth it? Any good advice???

Go to autozone or advance or o'reilly or something and they will read your code for free.

I bought a small code reader from a company called Launch for like $20 and it works just fine. I took my truck in a dealer and they charged me over $100 to tell me I had a problem with my ABS system...DUH...the message center said ABS and I wanted them to tell me what failed. :banghead: They wanted to charge me $1800 to fix it. Plus in their bill to plug in the scanner they wanted $8 for shop rags. I was pissed...after waiting 2 hours I watched them walk out to my truck, plug the scanner in and were done 2 minutes later. :nono: I ended up paying for a half hour worth of labor and I'll never go back there. When asked why they charged me for the rags they said they charge everybody. :screwy:

Thanks for the advice. I went to Advance Autoparts and they hooked it up for free and said that it was the EGR valve. That's only $141.00 out of pocket. What the hell is the real point in having this on your vehicle? Just another way to make money when it goes out!!! Didn't buy it yet, what kinda impact does it have on a vehicle?

AFAIK, you actually just block it off.

Here's a thread about blocking off the EGR valve.

Yeah Pep Boys/Auto Zone wil check for free and give you code and reason for light. I have a 2000 Z71 and recently had same problem. Code was for evaporative control system, shop replaced a valve (Chevy part #15759044) took about 20 minutes. sits near front of gas tank and is accessible through gap between cab and bed. Those are all going bad on 99-02 chevy's due to corrosion and build up.
