The EGR basically causes a bad mix at higher RPM.. not 14:1 air:fuel mixtures.
The CRANKshaft sensor causes jerks, stalls, inability to start, Usually a 41 code.

With a new CRANKSHAFT sensor I would expect no stalling, etc.
There are some aftermarket harmonic balancer wheels that have given trouble in timing. Usually never running smooth at any time.

Surging .. Moderate or severe?
Surging? Possibilities are
fuel filter,
fuel Pump,
spark plugs/wires,
throttle position sensor TPS,
timing chain,
each of which have to be tested.

Most often for surging its ignition system, a plug fires normally for a while then fails for a while.
plugs/wires but there are other possibilities.
If it surges during higher fuel demands then look at fuel system.
If it surges at 40 mph.. or less then your looking for TPS, timing chain as long as it isnt ignition.

AS for the codes. How about getting a fresh start.
Try resetting the coputer clearing the codes (remove battery cable for 20 seconds) and drive it again to set new codes.
Please understand the PCM may not even help you in the long run if its responding to a sensor that is telling the engine to surge.

You may note the injectors, more often they show up boldly as bad causing poor idle conditions unless theres a wiring problem.

How many miles on the engine?
Is the coolant clean and staying full?

I believe the covers on the speakers are removable from behind the kick panel.. not sure there.
Perhaps someone could post on that.

Theres some ideas.. hope it helps.

GOOD LUCK..

It's part of the VATS system. When the right resistance in the key is read by the TDM (theft deterrent module) or the computer, depending on the system year, the relay high in the dash on the firewall is enabled so that power can go to the starter. A rare failure from what I see in years of reading posts. I'm speaking from info abuot the 1998 model--the location is somewhere directly AC control level and maybe a little to the right, but it's all the way on the firewall. That would be hard to get to to try to steal the car!
