I was thinking about getting an Eclipse from '94-'99, something about $8g or less....less. But i was wondering which trims are available and which has the biggest or best motor? Perhaps if someone knew a website that offered that info for older cars would be awesome. I don't know anything about Eclipses that is why i need help.

This covers both Eclipses and Talons...

90-94 = 1st generation = 1g
95-99 = 2nd generation = 2g

RS = ESi = 420a motor = lowest model with fwd
GS = 420a motor and i believe they also offered the 4g64 motor with it = 2nd model up with fwd
GS-T = TSi = 4g63t motor = lowest turbo model with fwd
GSX = TSi AWD = 4g63t motor = mightest turbo model with awd

So, if you want mad power then I would go with the GSX or the TSi AWD... If you just want a cheap daily driver then I would go for one of the non-turbo models... Generally the Talons run a lot cheaper than the Eclipses do, but its pretty much the same car with a different front end and rear end. Same concept as Camaros and Firebirds. Same car, slight visual differences.

The 4g64 2.4L motor only came in the Spyder GS (convertible). All other RS/GS/ESI models came with the 2.0L 420a chrylser motor. GS-T (Spyder and hardtop), GSX, TSI, & TSI AWD all came with the 4g63 turbocharged motor. The 90-94 came with a 6-bolt 4g63 motor which seems to be stronger than the 95-99 7-bolt 4g63 motor, but anyone that plans on upgrading usually does a swap, putting the stronger 6-bolt motor into the 95-99 model cars.

Actually Garrett, only the 90-most 92's got 6 bolts. Some late 92's and all 93-94's got 7 bolts.

This is true... I suppose I should have gone into more detail about the 6 bolts and 7 bolts...

God damnit, I know better than that too. I got too jumbled up trying to get everything else straightened out, but you are correct Dustin.

Thanks a lot. I think i'll probably get a 95'-99' GS-T or GSX if i can find one for a decent price. For the 7 bolt motors though, what is crankwalk, and is it a really bad thing or just a minor problem. I'm not looking to mod too much just basic for now like intake and exhaust.

It's a very bad thing. It requires new internals. I'll let someone else explain it because I might not to the best of jobs. Maybe Blackcrow(from experience), thor, or gthompson can help you. It's all over the internet though. Its on this site and dsmtuners.com if you want search for a minute. It has plenty of write ups!

There's a couple theories about why it happens, but basically a quick rundown is this: The main crank shaft bearing wears out and the crank starts to wobble back and forth. Eventually it knocks out the crank sensor and the whole car shuts off and will not restart until you fix the sensor. The thing is though, by the time it hits the sensor, the crank, bearings, and sometimes the block is fucked and it's time for a new motor. There are a bunch of articles on it out there, and a couple of pretty strong theories, so if you want a complete rundown, google "Eclipse crankwalk" "4g63 crankwalk" or something to that effect and you'll get a bunch of info.

Even simpiler... parts on or around the crank wear down, causing it to wobble and break stuff. Important, expensive, needed stuff, like internals.

Yes, but it's the main thrust bearing that wears out first and causes it to wobble side too side.

I'm not scared, just trying to think ahead. Since I don't know how common the problem is, there's no reason to waste a few grand. However is crankwalk a problem for the 2000+ models?

No, but those models are ugly as sin anyways. Crankwalk is way overrated IMO. And the chances of you buying an DSM and keeping it stock if you're even half intersted in cars is like .01%. The only people that don't mod these cars are old ladies that drive them. Basically what I'm saying is that you'll get it, learn about it, and if you like modding, you'll eventually drop in a 6-bolt anyways and then won't have to worry about crankwalk ever again.
