im new to this and im not really a car guy but here we go!! I have a 91 civic hatch with a d15b1 1.5. But when I got it, it wouldnt start. i put new wires the spark plugs are good, i fixed the timing and checked the fuel pump, dizzy and new starter. But the car still wont run. So today i finally got it to start after playing with the timing a bit. but it only stayed on for 20 sec and turned back off. So then after a little while of cranking it it turned on again and i let it sit for a couple of second but it started slowing down and turned off again. So once again i started it and tried to give it a little gas and it would just turn back off. After a while a friend of mine got it to turn on and while he held the gas down it sounded weird revving and a ton of white smoke came out of the exhaust!!! so we called it a day but i really need this car to start...PLEASE HELP!!!-

well first off check what code your ecu may be throwing. that would be a start. second did that weird revving sounds like a gurgling sputter rev. or what.

i checked the computer and it said code 8 and i called the dealer and they said it was TDC (timing). But i think that was from before i reset the timing because it was way off... but then I disconnected the negative cable for a couple minutes because i read that that should reset it and it didn't say any codes anymore. and yes it was like a gurgling sound and it was letting out a lot of smoke. WHat could it be? also i do not have an intake right now...Do you think that could effect anything? i'm just trying to get it started for now I haven't even drivin it yet. The guy i got it from said he tried to turn it on one day and it wouldn't start so he never did anything and now i got it...it also sat for the entire summer!!

Sounds like the timing might be off a tooth or so. Mine usually did that when it was 2 teeth off, 1 tooth off it would start and idle fine, start cutting out at around 5300 rpms. Not having an intake tube on it isn't going to keep it from running either.

check the anti freeze levels to see if you've been burning anti freeze..might be head troubles if the timing belt checks out ok
