I was debating whether or not to post this in the die-cast forum, but since i'm treating it like any other plastic model, i thought i'd post it here. It's a Bburago alfa 156 police car diecast kit which i'm gonna convert into this

Never customised a diecast before, and this is the only kit of a 156 that i could find after searching high and low... well, here goes nothing...

I have one of those too, only mine is the regular street version. I haven't rebuilt it yet but I'm sure they can be nice.:)

I've got a pukey green street version, and I want to do a similar build of it. With a little TLC and "modelers charm" nobody will know the difference what material it's made of. Bburago did a decent job on it, the lines look good.

Maybe the three of us gang up and work on them at the same time? I can't for a while though...:(

Looks cool! Be good to do the race version too. BBBBBBurago seem to have done a good job...for a change!

Not exactly-I tried removing the mold lines on a metal body car, and I used a flat file and some sanding sticks, and it smoothed out beautifully. Metal isn't that difficult to work with if you have the right tools, and it cuts very smoothly and you won't go too far too fast like you can with plastic. After that, and cutting a roof off of a metal car w/my Dremel and a cutting wheel, diecast doesn't scare me whatsoever.

Strip the paint with some aircraft/automotive paint stripper. I got a can at Wal Mart, and the paint bubbled off the metal in seconds. Be careful w/it (don't let it on you, anything plastic, your skin, your clothes, or you lungs), but after it's clean and dry start removing the mold lines w/a file and finish up the areas w/sanding sticks or sandpaper. Only in extreme cases (such as hollow areas where a file or sandpaper won't reach) should you need to resort to using a Dremel.

A bigger problem will be in filling that hole on the roof. Might be worth you checking out some of the sites of people who customize Hot Wheels coz they do quite alot of tricky filling and bonding. I think they use something called JB Weld??? Heard of it???

I know what it is, though I haven't used it yet. It will work, I would fill the area w/a piece of sheet styrene bonded w/JB Weld or superglue, then use "standard" catalyzed (two part) spot putty to fill the gaps. A piece of tape underneath can hold the plastic in place while it's being adhered to the metal w/the glue or the epoxy.

Nicely, that s one project i have in my head : modify a bburago or a diecast, as the car i want doesn't exist in plastic...and a complete resin kit is too expensive... keep us inform of how nice it is to modified a die-cast.
