87 monte carlo timing problem

I have a 87 monte carlo lx sport with a timing problem I think. :banghead: When I pulled my monte out of storage it seemed to idle really bad. So I bump the timing up alittle. (After I did that the car ran great) Now it seems to run on. So to shut the car off I have to open the air cleaner and close the choke or sometimes I put it into reverse. So I turned the timing back to were it was and it does the same thing or I would have to drive it with my foot on the gas and brake because it wants to die.

By altering the base timing, I believe you were merely masking the true problem, the carburetor needs cleaning and linkanges lubed., Probably have varnished gas on the plates and dried up gunk on the linkages.

You should do this everytime you go to take a car out that hasn't been officially ran in a while. Take care of the carb and put the base timing back to where it should be.

edit, also how old is the gas?

The gas was a year old but I ran it out of gas then then put fresh in. I was thinking of rebuilding the carb. What do you think?

Did you try cleaning and lubing it :dunno:

Your Monte has an electronic carburator, and the mixture control solenoid is probably gummed up with varnish from the old fuel. As Wright suggested, clean the carb and lubricate the throttle plate pivot points and see if it straightens out.
