'07 Ice Storm, my story (56K death)

I finally have power AND water tonight. This is something I haven't been able to say since Friday.

In case you didn't know a very bad ice storm, some saying the worst ever in the history of the state, hit this past weekend in Oklahoma. Since I didn't have a TV or radio I was cut from the outside world and didn't know this is going on almost everywhere. If you're in the dark though here's the story.

Texas, Okla. shiver in grip of winter ice storm (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14117850/)

Anyway, I think at the very worst moment 220,000 in the state were out of power at the same time. Every single town within 20 miles of me on Sunday and Monday had no power. It was pitch black outside and one of the creepiest and weirdest experiences ever. I went through my town with some friends and it looked like the place had been abandoned for years.

One of the towns to the North finally came on and within hours sold out of gas. Water was sold out as well as D batteries, hell any batteries, and water. Most of the water plants in the area shut down but the National Guard came in with generators. The bad part though is when they were out of power the pipes and pumps froze solid so it took even longer to get longer. We finally got water yesterday.

As soon as the first wave hit, generators sold out everywhere. People were going out with several thousand in cash and getting four or five generators at a time. A guy came down to the store I work at and had a horse trailer with 50 or 60 and started selling them. He was from Kansas and they had leftovers from when they got hit with an ice storm. So when he heard we were getting hit he loaded up and headed down here.

There was also the case of water. If people weren't on city water they were on a well. Since they had no power, they had no well. Even if they got a generator some of them still had no water because the lines busted. We're finally in stock but around Monday and Tuesday people were ready to kill. Water was more valuable than liquid gold.

An example is the store I work at. It had no power Monday and I was there to move all of our ice cream and meat into a truck to ship away so it wouldn't go bad. A man opened up our front door and said, "I need water please!" We told him we were closed and he said, "I don't care, I just need some water!" We had to grab him and throw him out of the store.

Once our power came back on though the outside looked like a zombie movie. People were crowded by the door banging on it saying, "let us in!" or "we need food/water/batteries/whatever!" This was Monday and we were the only store that had this stuff. Wal-Mart is 20 miles away but they were mainly sold out and were also out of power. So you'd have to go to Tulsa which is 50 miles away just to get any water or batteries and that is just a waste and silly. So our store was the logical choice and people wanted in. We finally had to open early when our power came back even though we weren't ready because we were afraid people would break the front door.

There were also people who were being nice though and helped out. Due to the ice lots of trees fell. They were all over the roads and blocked people in. There were cases of small towns being trapped in by fallen trees. Anyway, on Sunday and Monday many people got in there 4X4 trucks and either pulls the trees from the roads or if they had an old truck, rammed the tree and smashed it to hell and pushes it over to the side of the road. There were also people who drove around and helped people who were stuck or their cars drove off to the side of the road. The woman who owns the gas station across the street from where I work was handing out chicken to poor families. She said she couldn't sit by and watch people starve.

With the good though also comes the bad people. I don't see how people can do this but they can and do. For instance a gas station knew it was the only place within a certain area to have gas and knew most people couldn't get it elsewhere. So it took its base price of $2.00 a gallon and raised it to $3.50 a gallon. The store also raised the prices of all of their items, especially the ones of interest like water, batteries, ect. Also, the store I'm at sells 16.5 oz bottles of propane for $5.00 which is the normal price. However, there were places that raised the price to $25.00 - $30.00. There were also people who would go in and buy up all the stock that came in and then go out and sell it back to people for double the price. Now we have looting going on in the back areas where there are no paved roads or clear roads, no power, no phone, and people are getting robbed. They have no way to call the police and it's hard enough to get out there but added to the fact ice and trees are all over it's even harder. This makes those people easy targets.

Lucky enough though the price increases and such are pretty much gone as stock has started to return and items that have a high demand have a high number. However, the looting is still going on. More and more people are getting power and water everyday but it's in the country that's the problem. There are thousands of people within 10-20 miles of me out in the country and they're saying it could be seven weeks before they all get power again.

Anyway, that's all I can think of at the moment. I went out and took pictures today so I thought I'd show to you guys. Remember, this is not snow on the ground but rock solid hard ice that's covering everything.

That tree knocked down a pole that took out the power to my neighborhood.

Just a downed tree in my town.

Ice.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1604.jpg
That is a solid sheet of ice across that parking lot. You can really slide on it.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1605.jpg
The trees just split due to the weight of the ice.

Closer look.

The limb almost hit their house. There were cases though of it actually hitting places and some houses are destroyed. Couldn't get to them though to take pictures.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1609.jpg
Don't worry nobody lives there.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1611.jpg
Outside of town. As you can see it's heavily wooded. The direction I'm pointing is where there is no power and there are a whole lot of people.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1612.jpg
Good look at how much ice we got on our stuff.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1613.jpg
These people have no power and miles behind them is the same as the last picture. It's a heavy wooded area with lots of people and no power.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1615.jpg
Just a sign with ice.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1616.jpg
This is and was like many roads. Most of the main roads don't have this problem. The back roads though are still like this and I couldn't go farther as I would have needed a truck to make it.

Ok remember that wooden power pole I showed you? One of them got so much ice on it that it fell over. When it did that it caused a domino effect that knocked over 50 over and took out a sub-station.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1620.jpg
This is a sub-station that got part of it ripped out from the poles.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1623.jpg
The power lines that lay across half of the county.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1621.jpg
This is what the power poles knocked over in their domino affect.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1625.jpg
Not good.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1628.jpg
As you can see, there should be power poles and lines.

Now that was at the sub-station. I went down the road a couple of miles and found where the lines cross the road.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1629.jpg
Again, no poles or lines but just the stubs.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1631.jpg
Same as the above.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1633.jpg

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1634.jpg

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o69/Muscletang/07%20ice%20storm/100_1635.jpg
This is how much ice was and is on the lines.

Now this is just a very, very, very, very small sample of the power lines here. As I said, the power companies said it could be seven weeks or a couple of months before everything is fixed.

wow, looks alot like the ice storm we got around here in '99. there was ice everywhere, around my house wasn't as bad but there were some places that got it horribly. don't remember how many people died (i'm thinking somewhere around 100) but it was bad. my house used to be on a bad power grid that lost power alot so we were very well prepared, we've got tonnes of candles, flashlights, lamps, a fireplace, boardgames, cards, etc.

i'll post pics if i get around to it, but probably not.

Seeing that and realizing it could happen here makes me want to move my timetable up for installing a home generator system in my house to deal with power outages. We only got 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice in central NY this week and it hasn't melted off yet. Looks pretty though when the sun is out and it makes all the ice glisten on everything. I want to take pictures but misplaced my digital camera:frown: .

wow. Good luck with you and the rest dealing with this.

It's maddd cool (I'm a sucker for awesome weather lol) but maad unfortunate to hear about this.

Couldn't those stores later be sued for price gouging?

BTW the Northeast two years ago had a pretty decent ice storm around dec. or jan. I remember everything was covered in a quarter to half inch layer of ice. I was surprised we didn't lose power.

We had some Ice a few years back in Indiana.

Glad to here everythings coming back on so soon.
No power does suck ! Something we all take for granted, till its not working .

Be carefull out there !

about that whole no power thing, i actually enjoyed the black out we had in 2005. it was nice to not have a computer or anything like that. as i said before, my house was prepared so it wasn't as bad. but it's nice to sit back and enjoy simple things like board games with the fam and stuff like that. i don't do that enough anymore.

We did that as well with the neighbors. They came over and we had a good time.

As for games I played dad in chess.

2-1 was the record :grinyes:

i haven't played chess with my dad in years. we've got an awesome marble chess set built into a table. you can have a normal table, then take off the top and it's a beautiful chess set.

That is some really bad damage. Hopefully things will get back to normal soon. Power outages are the worst. Last year we had an ice storm that killed power in the Upstate of SC for a week at least. I know my parents went a week without power. Since we use kerosene heat anyway, the heat issue still sucked as usual but we didn't have power for the bathroom space heater which was awful. Luckily, we got power back within 2 days since I live like 5 miles from three nuclear reactors and a power plant. Unfortunately, my parents had to deal with the no power for a week. I believe they stayed with my sister for a few nights though. My wife's parents live in downtown Greenville and they went a week without power. In fact, most of the well-to-do neighborhoods in Greenville went without power because the old trees just crumbled from the weight of the ice. It was interesting to say the least to see rich people outside cleaning up their yards using chainsaws etc. Of course, there were lots of hired hands as well to do the dirty work. I specifically remember trying to take the normal route to work during the morning of the storm in my crx. I took the backroad to cut across county to the freeway as I would normally and that was a mistake. It took me about 2 hours to get to my office only to lose power and go to the downtown location and work in the basement staring at a wall for 5 hours. The next day I still came to work but got to leave early...

It sounds like it was total mayhem there for you. The price gouging is simply unethical in a time of crisis...

Reminds me of the ice storm we had here in '97. Some places were without power for a week (mostly the well-to-do communities) and the damage to the trees was really noticable in the summer when the leaves were coming out. Montreal got hit at the same time, I was up there that summer and alot of the trees looked like poles with bushes planted on top.

thats an awsome display of nature's strength, hope everyone is well.

the one picture of the lot covered in a single sheet of ice, looks entertaining. i'd bring out my old skateboard and remove the trucks and just go wild. probably end up breaking a bone or something, but still looks fun.

That's incredible. I remember when we had an icestorm back here in 99-00 and we had a lot of destruction like that. We didnt have power for about a week, looks like you're out for longe than that. Hope you get some light and heat soon mate.

Nebraska is pretty used to the winter extremes but it kindof blindsighted everyone i think because that same week i was driving in a t shirt with my windows down some days....when i was a kid there used to be walls of snows that we couldnt see past lol. Idk how it is everywhere else but we have builtin snowdays into the school schedule too.

thats pretty intense. i'd bust out my ice skates and play some ice hockey in the streets or parking lots. good luck gettin that all cleaned up. my question is if you don't have power, how'd you get the pictures onto a computer and are using the internet?

The day I first posted this was the first day I had power back.

Also, as of yesterday, it seems everybody was able to get their power back finally. Yes, it took that long. Also, it snowed yesterday and today too. Funny huh?
