broken acumulator spring

Hello all, been dealing with a "bang" when engaging reverse lately, and spoke with a shade tree mechanic about it. He said it sounds as though there is a spring broken in the acumulator in the transmission, accessible by dropping the pan and removing the pickup/accumulator by the valve body? I'm not sure he was familiar with Taurus transmissions, but does this sound right to anybody? He said alot of trans shops will tell you your tranny is bad, and needs rebuild, but all they will do is replace some of the small springs and bolt back together. I've got a 2001 with AX4N and Duratec. Not thinking of doing it now, its 10 degrees out, but maybe in the spring if this will clear it up and improve shifting. Oh, 45K miles on the car, changed fluid and filter at 36K. Thanks for the feedback!

Don't know, but I'm dealing with a "bang" of my own,, 99 Taurus 24v, 65K miles. Picked up my wife at work tonight, on the way home heard and felt a loud thump, at first thought I had driven over some rough road, found out differently when I came to a stop. Real harsh downshift, then I'm thinking we took off from a dead stop in 2nd or 3rd gear,, torque converter did lock up, but then trans was banging in and out of od, so I shifted down to "D", something interesting also happened at this point,, a little green "o\d off" light, lower left of tach side, started flashing on and off, I've never seen this light in the 5 years we've owned this car, and I drive around the city in "D" range quite a bit. anyway I told my wife we're pushing on home, something major has happened internally, trans was making some weird noises, misc thumps and random banging and clanging,,, I told my wife we'll go until we're towed... we made it home, about 15 miles... parked in front, checked it out. no reverse or forward gears left.. no codes.. burnt trans fluid stink, not really harsh, but definite smell. I'm getting AAA to tow it to the trans shop that did my other work, they're good.. I'll post back the painful news, with cost, when I get it...

About 1450 to rebuild it, with a couple of extra parts(oil seal, told him to replace it regardless, broken trans mount, must have broken when the trans decided to kill itself, couple exhaust parts) trans was totally wiped out internally, I haven't seen the parts pile yet, picking it up tomorrow,, guy told me he hasn't seen such internal damage in a while, on older Taurus's yes, most major issues have been worked out.. quality local shop, good rep..
