Hi

Jeremy clarkson is visiting SA soon. He is hosting a show at one of exihebition centres. the add goes as such : Motoring mayhem is on its way to South Africa as Jeremy Clarkson takes centre stage along with some of the most spectacular cars on the planet for MPH '07

Can any one confirm if therre will be a Mclaren there. I have heard that there is one in SA, however no one can confirm.

Please any info will be greatly appreciated.

There is definitely a McLaren F1 in Johannesburg, SA unless things have changed recently with #037. Whether it will show up at this event with Clarkson probably won't be known until the actual event takes place, but if I had a chance to go laugh at that "wanker" Jeremy Clarkson in person, I certainly wouldn't pass on the opportunity.

That would be wonderful. The car has a rather uniquely finished interior and currently there are just a few photos existing. If you can manage to get some more of those, including a shot of the chassis plate you'd be the man.

Here's hoping they include it in the event for our sake and yours. :)

Hi

Apparently there are 2 now in the country. May i publishone of the names i have recieved ?

I sent a mail to the organisers yesterday and this was the response :

"We are trying to get our hands on one (of the 2) that exist. It is not confirmed yet - If you have any contacts besides (***** ******), please let me know."

With a little luck i will get to see one of them.

You can if you want. I assume it is different from the name that we know, as Manelis has one extra character compared to the one you have *'d out.

I wasn't aware there was more than one F1 there. Was your note specific? Maybe they were referring to a different type of McLaren - SLR, Formula One car, or CAN/AM possibly?

The other name i have is Anton Rupert

Now wether they now which car i am talking about, i am unsure. As many know when talking about a Mclaren most people immediatly think about the SLR.

Ps, Do you have pics of 037 for me. i have none of the car

well only time will tell.

Hi Noddy,

Was Anton an owner of the car ?

Peloton, do you have more info on the "Manelis" character ?

when do i stop being a newbie ?

I have been told that Antons car has been passed on to his Son. So it seems that Noddy's comment that Anton has passed on is quite possible true.

If we can get more info on the "Manelis" character, i have been told by the show organisers that they will try and get the car to the show. They seem very eager as i have received several emails from them asking for more info.

So if anyone has the smallest amount of info, even just the registration pate, that will help. I have contacts that will be able to source personal via a registration plate. If i get his number i may just be able to organise a photo shoot on the car.

further, i am now trying to locate Johan Rupert. Maybe for a photo shoot of his car too.

For the record, I have not come across that man's name before in reference to an F1, but I learn previously "unknown" things about the F1s earliest owners quite often.

It appears Mr Anton had some direct ties to the racing world as he "turned Rothmans into a global brand and led the company into motor racing after his Rembrandt company, which was started in 1948 in South Africa, bought the Rothmans brand in 1972."

This article tells about his amazing success story in greater detail, but makes no mention of an F1 unfortunately.

http://www.worldtempus.com/wt/1/780 <- page loads very slowly for me

If someone in his position had purchased an F1 I would not be at all surprised. The article does contain a quote from one of his sons that reads "He doesn't like money. He never buys anything.", so maybe that assumption would be wrong.

Peloton, do you have more info on the "Manelis" character ?

I don't recall much about him other than his first name is Peter. I do believe there is a certain user on FerrariChat who knows him well and may be able to contact him in regards to this show. I will message him with the link to see if he can help out. :)

As for getting out of "Newbie" status - maybe that happens at 50 posts. :dunno: Honestly I think people in this forum pay more attention to the quality of someone's post rather than whatever generic title is found under their name. I wouldn't let it worry you. :grinno:

I have been searching around on the net. also came accross the name Peter. there is a dawn manelis too who is involved in cars here too. she has placed in several concourse shows for an alfa. maybe they related.

Will continue to search.

Thanks for the info about Anton. We are now getting somewhere. Gonna pick up the phone directory soon and make some calls.

Peter must have a connection to Dawn as I have this quote taken from an earlier email I received about him:

"He loves the F1 but he restores 50's and 60's era Alfas and he has some of the the most beautiful cars you'll ever lay your eyes on."

Good luck in your search. I have just hit send on my note to Peter's friend. Hopefully he will be able to offer some help. :)

well i have managed to get hold of his cousin. His cousin will not give me his number but, has taken my contact details. I do hope i hear from him soon.

Peter Manelis lives about 30km from me.

I recall also seeing an actual photo, not a photo copy or a print but an actual photo of a mclaren supposedly based in the area from which Peter Manelis lives. could this be one and the same car i ask my self.

So far my search is looking quite promising.

Dawn is his wife.

Nice to hear that you made contact. I hope that our efforts pay off and the 70,000 expected visitors to the MPH07 show in SA do get a chance to see/experience an F1 because of it. That would make me feel pretty happy even if I can't make it over too. :)

If Peter does indeed have the car it has certainly travelled the world as Peloton reported that Peter and the car resided in Laguna Beach California in 2003. Chassis 37 according to the info reported at the time.

Hello, Peter lives in Alberton in SA. He has a mind blowing collection of cars.Mclaren 037 was purchased from a German who used to ship it to the UK for service, wouldnt let his girlfriend even sit in it.When he went to purchase the car the guy put on special slippers and doctors coat, totally nuts this guy, anyway amongst this germans collection, all silver was a 959, XJR220 etc.Peters cars ALL origionals, some american tanks , some one off specials, lots of latin beauty's though.Dawn is his wife, she collects alfa's , has a huge collection of them, and has been known to buy entire car COLLECTIONS in order to get her hands on an Origional toolkit..!Peter also owned/Built the Trans Am Gale Banks twin turbo which set the land speed record in SA a good few years ago.Back to the Mclaren, yes they Moved to California a few years back to settle down, but decided that in Sunny SA you can actually drive all your cars without 2 tons of legislation and lawsuits.one thing I must say is that he actually Drives, and I mean DRIVES all his cars.Basicly family travels the world buying cars & spares.....mmmm..tough day at the office...Have to go now......Who's the Mclaren nut from SA that wants to go see the car..?

Remembered this funny quote when I found a picture taken of #037 back in 1999:

http://www.carspotting.de/userfiles/192/McLaren-McLaren-F1_1364.jpg

Caption from the source said: 1999. AUTOHIGHLIGHT'99 Düsseldorf - Königsallee (West)

So then that led me to Google "AUTOHIGHLIGHT" where I found this image of an early Koenigsegg prototype:

http://www.carspotting.de/userfiles/192/Koenigsegg-Koenigsegg-CC-Prototyp_1323med.jpg

And I thought to myself - why does that goofy tent awning look so familiar to me, and then BOOM, it hit me (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=5765583&postcount=18)!

Looking closer at the image in that other thread, I can even see the "McLaren" windshield banner now, so #037 it is.
