cold start

When it gets really cold out side like in the 20's like it has been here, my car does not want to stay running. I put a open maf air cleaner on it and thats why i think it is doing it. The only sensor i have hooked up on it is the one at the base, i think it is the intake air temp thing. I go to start it and it turns over ok and starts and kicks up to about 1,200 rpm's like it should when it is cold but it only runs for one sec if that. I have to start it and rev it or hold the gas down a bit then it starts and goes and stays at the 1,000-1,200 rpm's till it gets warm. This is only when it is VERY cold out. It runs and drives great it is just when it is VERY cold out it does this. Any ideas?

Is the coolant temp sensor (front of intake manifold) hooked up?

unplug the oxygen sensor? like just unplug it then plug it back in? or leave it unpluged. It is weird it only does this when it it first started up and really cold. You think it might be the TPS sensor? But i think my idle would be messed up also.

What is an "open MAF" air cleaner? I've been hanging around cars for about 30 years, and ThirdGens for about 20 of those, and have never seen one of those. Is that like an "open element" air cleaner? Come to think of it, I've never seen a MAF on a TBI equipped car, let alone any form or '90-92 ThirdGens except V-6s.
The IAT sensor that you are describing needs to be positioned in the intake air stream for it to operate properly. The factory ECM programming expects an increasing intake air temperature within a few minutes of engine start since the original configuration had the EFE system installed. You can get around that to some extent by reprogramming (increasing) the cold closed loop timer with a bit more delay (hex address $0BB).

well i put that IAT in the bottom on the air cleaner so it does get sucktion. And ya it is just a open element cleaner. I will look and try to clean the TPS.
