just take off connector at alternator, remove alternator bolts, and belt and thats it. its gonna be kinda difficult since the alternator is in the rear of the engine. good luck

I encountered the same thing when I tried to change the altenator in a delsol I used to have. After trying unsucsessfully to remove the altenator I got out my manual and it said to remove the axle. So I said screw this and took it to an altenator shop and they were able to get it out with out removing the axles. I asked how they did it and they said if you jack it up just right you can get it out. This is easy for them because they have a pit under the car they can work from so they don't have to jack the car high enough to fit under.

I just finished replacing an alternator on a 1996 Civic. After putting the car on ramps, I took out the top bolt, the 2 wire connections on the back of the alternator, plus the wire hold-down bolt on the back of the alternator, then the bottom bolt (actually, it wasn't even in there!), then the bracket that the bottom bolt goes in. There wasn't clearance to get the alternator out, so after finding this thread I jacked up the driver side until the front driver's wheel was fully extended (the axle stopped going down even if I went higher). I put in a jack stand for safety, and after trying a few different directions, was able to pull the alternator out of the left side of the compartment from the bottom, just above the axle. Oh yeah, the black plastic shield/air dam on the bottom front of the car was removed, but I don't know if that was necessary.
