I own a 98 740 IL that has an issue with the break lights in the light housing itself. However, The third break light in the back window works fine. I have purchased new sockets, new bulbs, and inspected the light socket housing finding no sign of holes, corrosion, or burn marks. This leaves me to believe that there is a fuse somewhere that I can't find that is blown. Can anyone please give me some advice so I can get back on the road with this nice machine?! Thanks!

In the E32's there were a few (perhaps just two?) places where fuses were. Under the hood on the drivers (LHD) side and under the rear drivers side seat.
Dunno if this helps you out at all with an E38, but it might be worth a shot!
