Fuel Tank problem

I have had the frequently reported problem of the Service engine soon light appearing and disappearing for about 8mos. I have at times assumed it was the gas cap. I also did a Code read which reported a fuel vapor leak, which gave creadance to that assumtion. Now a new problem...

I noticed that I am having trouble filling the gas tank. Any pump clicks off and the fuel backs up in the tank fill line. It often splashes out as if overfilled. I can pump .5 - 1gal at a time most of the time this is going on now for about a week or so. I have made an appointment to get vehicle in for check, but wanted to know if anyone had Ideas here. I am assuming it is a venting problem of the fuel tank. But were is this vent and is it something I could tackle. I am out of warranty at 46K miles in one year, (I Drive). Pretty ticked off at the quality of the fuel system to date with the whole Engine light thing and all. Any Help would be appreciated.
