Suspension Lift

i have a 1985 full size blazer im looking at putting a suspension lift on by adding an extra leaf. how do you determine how long of a leaf to put in and do you put it on top of the pack on at the bottom.. also how much do can you lift it this way. dont worry about drive shaft lengths or anything like that when responding... im not looking at spending a pile of money that why im avoiding a kit.
