Apparently, they are bred big for their meat.

Freaky flashbacks of Watership Down from when I was a kid. I was scared of rabbits for months after that movie.

Saw that story on CNN last Monday. I guess the Koreans are having people in Germany raise them to be used as a food source. I tried to find a link to that story, but came up with this while searching:http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/giantrabbit.asp

Edit: Found a link to a story about it, not from CNN though -->http://www.boingboing.net/2007/01/12/giant_rabbits_to_sol.html

I suppose you could just adjust the ingredients to suit:

Ingredients:
4 lb Rabbit
1 1/2 c Dry red wine
3/4 c Cider vinegar
2 ts Salt; optional
1/2 ts Freshly ground black pepper
1 Bay leaf
1/2 c Onions; chopped
1 tb Mixed pickling spice
1/2 c Flour
4 tb Butter
1 c Onions; thinly sliced
2 tb Sugar
1/2 c Sour cream

Directions:

Cut rabbit in serving-sized pieces. Wash, scrape, and soak in salted cold water for 1 hour. Drain and dry.
In a glass or pottery bowl mix together the wine, vinegar, salt, pepper, bay leaf, chopped onions, and pickling spice. Add the rabbit and let marinate in the refirgerator for 3 days. Turn the pieces occasinally. Drain the rabbit; strain and reserve the marinade. Dry the rabbit with paper towels and roll in flour.

Melt butter in a Dutch oven or deep heavy skillet; brown the rabbit and sliced onions in it. Pour off fat and add sugar and 1-1/2 cups marinade. Cover and cook over low heat 1-1/2 hours or until rabbit is tender. Turn the pieces occasionally and add more marinade if needed. Taste for seasoning. Mix the sour cream into the gravy just before serving.

I raise rabbits and keep the males seperate from the females to control yields, but they have f@*#ing ingrained in their genetics. I've got a few pics of 3 month old males trying to hump the bigger guys. I'll try to post the pics soon.

haha yumm. i've got to say that rabbit is the tastiest white meat i've had (well, almost, ragout de pat is the tastiest, it's pigs feat, calfs rather, stew and it's delicious, and the most tender meat you'll ever have) i had it in a stew once and it was awesome. with these ones you could probably just make some massive steaks and bbq them, that'd be interesting. i want one, be some nice competition for my dog.

I refuse to eat rabbit. I love bunnies.

And that's just cruel...reminds me of those people that feed their children too much and have 70lb. 3-year-olds. No rabbit wants to be that big. The ones in the first picture probably couldn't hop if their lives depended on it.
