Ignition Switch??

I have been having issues with my 2003 Grand AM starting.

I started to turn the key to the "ON" position and listen for the fuel pump before starting to see if it kicks in when the vehicle does not want to start.

When the car starts: Fuel Pump runs, the check engine light, battery light, security light, and oil light stay on when the key is turned to "ON".

When the car does not start: Fuel Pump DOES NOT run, the battery light, security light, and oil light stays on when the key is turned to "ON". The check engine light DOES NOT stay on.

I am thinking it is the ignition switch, but want a second opinion before changing anything.

So what makes you think its the ignition switch?

Does the security light flash when the key is on and it doesnt start?
Does the key not want to turn in the ignition cylinder?

Have you checked for trouble codes?

Need more info about your cars condition to solve this one. :grinyes:

The security light does not flash when the vehicle does not want to start.

The key turns no problem, when the vehicle does not want to start. The starter turns the engine over, but the engine does not start. Sounds like the engine is getting no fuel.

Had someone check for trouble codes the first time this happened and was told that there were no codes.

I'd just hate to replace the ignition switch,
and that not be whats causing your no start issues.

Here is the GM part #12458191, about $95 from GM parts direct.

I do not want to replace the wrong part either, but do not know what to do to confirm it's the switch.

Yes I do know how, but its lengthy and I'm not posting it right now.

Just requires the ignition switch terminal identification & continuity chart and a multimeter, oh and a couple hours of your time.

The ignition(key[lock]) cylinder is the same 99-03 GM #12458191 .
The ignition switch (is what the cylinder goes into) for your car 02-03 Gm #22688239.

All I have is the 99-01 testing procedures, I'll see if I can find the later models too.
