I've been looking recently for a late 90's cummins and see alot with high mileage which is expected. But how many miles can a well maintained Cummins generally last for before it starts to lose it?

The catch words are..well maintained. You should expect at least 3k to 4k miles before any head work. even then the cross hatch marks should be able to be seen on the cylinder walls. I have a 94 with 260k on it and a 92 with 560k and they still run great. The Cummins engine will outlast the truck.

"Outlast the truck". Well put. True with proper maintenance and oil changes.

watch for the 53 block markings these blocks are pron to crack . you can find the "53" on the block casting above the oil pan towards the front.
12 valve cummins are almost bullet proof and are very easy to modify
24 valves are good as well but some have lift pump issues
but with either style get guages !!!!! EGT,(exhaust gas temp) boost , fuel pressure and on the auto a trans temp won't hurt either.
enjoy your truck when you get it :)
