Hi, Im just wondering if anyone is into mx5's? Does anyone no or have herd of an mx5 with a straight six engine. Ive searched everywhere and no1 seems to have done it. I intend to try and put a toyota supra 7mge engine in mine in the very near future. Obviously its gonna be tight! Any advice would be very much appreciated. Cheers.

You might want to get out a tape measure first.
I think a straight 6 simply, won't physicaly fit in the very short MX5.
There's also the issue of weight, that much weight in the front of a light weight car can cause problems. Your basicly trying to re-create the Triumph Vitesse, not the worlds greatest sports car.

You'd be better off putting
1. a turbo on the motor that's in there
2. putting a bigger badder 4cyl motor in there and maybe turbocharging that
3. possibly shoehorning the mazda 2.5l v6 in there.

Shudder.......
Iv never liked that motor. Goes well, then goes pop.
The MX5 engine bay is however quite wide, a small block ford fits in with a little work.
So if your going to go for a nasty V6, why not instead go for a really nice V8.
Can anyone say Toyota QUAD Cam :D

Thanks guys, ive had a reasonable measure up and it looks good with the rad moved and obviously the bonnet won't close! Im def gonna try it! Umm has any1 seen the toyota v8 in one before?(the one from the lexus yeah 4L) that mite be tempting! Thing is if i can get a straight six in there the sky is the limit for the little car rearly (you may not agree). Worry about suspension and stuff if it works! Not interested in a straight4 at all im afraid, turbo or not, or a v6.

lots of people have put 13Bs in MX-5s, light engine with a lot of power powential. might be worth looking at.

i think that the lexus quad cam V8 sounds good.
i'd even be tempted to put one in my current car if i had the money.

my dad had a couple of LS400s, with the quad-cam 4-litre, it's an amazingly smooth engine, incredibly refined.

Yeah I agree, I think the v8 will be my fall back option if this doesn't work.

it's a good engine, it's light compact and smooth. it has excellent tuning potential, with some being past the thousand horsepower mark. although, i think that's a bit much for an MX-5.
the light weight means handling won't be too badly affected, and being compact it'll probably fit in without too much work.
the electrics are going to be a pain.

Yeah im expecting wiring trouble with whatever engine i get. And it would sound amazing! Alot of poeple supercharge them aswell. There is a new car in australia which is based on the mx5, looks very similar, called the Bullet Roadster which uses this engine with a supercharger with staggering performance. 180mph 0-60 in 3.9 sec. obviously its a little more than an mx5 but like you say the engine has good potential. I might look into this engine in a bit more detail.

when the 1UZ-FE sounds that good, it's hard not to want to put it in something more sporty.
