Pitman arm

I just replaced my Pitman arm on my 1997 Silverado. Wasn't that hard to take off. My problem was replacing it. The large nut end of the arm does not seem to want to fully seat down to the steering column. The splines were lined up correctly and it slid on nicely up to a point and then stopped, leaving a gap of about 1/2 inch or so. I was able to get the large nut on and securely tighten to where the bolt stem extends past the end of the nut. Took it by a local mechanic and he looked at it and put another 1/2 turn on the nut and said it was o.k. Everything was tight, but I'm still skeptical. And I can't remember how far down the old Pitman arm was to begin with. Maybe there was a gap there? old age is getting to me! any ideas?

A gap is normal. As long at the nut is tight you will be fine.

Can you tell what size wrench it took to take off the nut? I need to replace my pitman arm, but I believe the nut is metric and I don't have that size. Thanks,
James
