7MGTE to 7MGE

Yes you read correct, I want to remove from my very fast Supra GT Limited the 7MGTE with R154 and replace it with a 7MGE with an auto behind it. Crazy? Yes but the reason is simple. The previous owner spent an extra $8000 on the engine and had so much fun he could not slow down to run it in so the bores are glazed and it has blow by bad. The twin plate Os Giken clutch is quite worn also. I would love to be able to fix the 7MGTE NOW but I can't due to the fact that after all these years no one has invented a simple procedure where it is possible to leave the head on when you hone the bores. What should only going to cost me $40 for the hone ends up to be too expensive when I have to pull the head off and purchase expensive head bolts and gasket. I had a choice, 1) do up GTE and leave it off the road for far too long while working for the money, 2) Sell all the high performance gear and purchase a Lexus V8 to put in it and 3) buy the 7MGE with auto, computer, auto shifter and standard exhaust for $500 from ebay. I took the final option. After searching for a standard flywheel so I could bolt up the R154 without having to spend $1,200 on the twin plate (That is the last thing I want to buy for it, the engine comes first) I had no luck at all the places I could find in Australia, of course I did not look for a new one I would be better off spending the money on the twin plate. My only option is now to put in the 7MGE and auto, and believe me it hurts. But I started to think, what does the computer actually control? Does the computer control the digital dash? Does it control the electronic suspension? What operates the ABS? Is it possible to be able to put that motor and box in my Supra? I can't use the original computer because apart from being a manual turbo it has a coil pack where as the 7MGE has a distributer. Any ideas?

Interesting, although I fail to see the problem. Is this your only means of transportation? A high HP 7M is not a very wise choice for a daily driver. Atleast I assume it's high HP, all I've seen is "very fast" and OS Giken.

I can see a few issues, the GE vs GTE tach have different values, so I can only assume that a GTE digital dash would not read the GE signal. If it's just for temporary while you rebuild the original 7MGTE I don't see a problem with leaving it unhooked and driving by feel/sound. The speed sensor should bolt right on the trans no problem and the other sensors are the same. For the ease of temporary installation why not leave the R154 in. Just replace the clutch packs and discs, it costs less than $600 (US) for both OS Giken rebuild kits, which you would have to replace regardless and break in. Plus no need for any wiring or finding an auto driveshaft and all other automatic swap parts. TEMS is a seperate system and ABS should not be affected by the change.

Another option would be to use the GTE wiring and electronics on the GE engine block, just return the electronics back to stock and swap the distributor out for the CPS, coil packs, AFM, injectors, and all the other sensors and electronics. Run it like that until you rebuild the engine, then the swap back is simple.

If you want to do a 1UZ or any other engine besides a Toyota I6, don't expect any help from me.:cwm27:

Swaping the distributor for the coil pack was an idea I had but I was told that they are different engines and it is a difficult process. Is this information wrong? I realize that it is not a practible daily driver, I have a 1968 8 seat Toyota Crown MS53 wagon, a 1970 Toyota Crown MS55, a 1982 Toyota Crown MS112, a 1985 Toyota Cressida MX73 GLXi and a 1986 Cressida GLi as well as the Supra and I have decided to keep one. They are all excellent vehicles, but which one would you keep? I am sure the answer is obvious. I didn't realize it would be as easy as you say to insert the GE, I have all that is required to do the job, but I am leaning towards puting the GE into my GLX Cressida and selling it to pay for the repairs to the GTE. Question, I assume that when I remove my APR headbolts they will have to be replaced with new ones, am I correct? Karu.

That's quite a list of cars, almost wish we got a few of those here in the US. If you sold all of that you should definetly have enough funds to rebuild the engine and then some left over. The engines are virtually the same, minor details but for this swap it shouldn't be an issue. I have heard of people reusing ARP studs but I wouldn't. You might as well swap them out while the engine is apart for extra peace of mind and safety.

Alright, a few things.

The R-154 speed cable will not hook into the W-58.

The GE and GTE have different flywheels with different bolt patterns for both the crank and clutch, so using the R-154 with the GE will be difficult.

The coil packs cannot simply be swapped for the distributer. The motors are quite different.

I would contact ARP for their reccomendation on the head bolts.
