I am currently working on an overhaul of a 2000 4.0L SOHC Ranger. My question is involving the roller lifters. I understand that they need to be installed in their original positions, however, its been about 2 months between the tear down and rebuild so my recollection of how they came out is a little foggy. Has anyone gone through this, and could anyone provide some help/insight involving the reinstall?

Without questioning your ability I hope you are using some sort of references. In my opinion although it is ideal and recommended that you replace the old rollers in their original spots, I don't think it is thst critical since the hydraulic lifters adjusts the gap automatically.

I checked in the worthless 'chitlins' manual, nothing, I went down to the local ford dealership and checked their more complete book, nothing. I have them in the original locations, my question was more specifically regarding the oil ports on one side of each lifter and whether they should face towards the cam or 180degrees out. However, due to the fact that I did not locate any specific references to this, I am going to assume that it does not necessarily matter.

Let me check my manual and see what I can find on the subject. I'll let you know.

I checked my factory manual which detailed the overhaul procedure and there was nothing in the chapter to indicated concern about the oil ports so I suppose it's not an issue about the positioning. By the way now I'm curious, what are the advantages as well as disadvantages between the 4.0L Vin X and the 4.0L Vin E. One thing I found out was that the 4.0L SOHC has a 9.7:1 compression ratio while the 4.0L DOHC is only 9.0:1. By the way, is the upper intake manifold in you vehicle made out of cast metal. I have the DOHC and mine is made of plastic.
