I own a 99 GST and have recently had a rod start knocking a little...i decided to replace the rod and bearing, and while at it, have the whole motor rebuilt, but wasnt sure if a 6 bolt swap would be better...probably more expensive but better...any ideas?? Also any ideas on some other inexpensive modifications that can be made while in the process???

It depends on what you have in mind for the car. If you are already at higher miles without any signs of crankwalk then I wouldn't worry about a 6 bolt swap. Of course, sometimes they can still develope crankwalk if you start modding them more so... Its really all a matter of opinion and future plans.

I agree... How many miles are on your car now? and I noticed that you have a 99 and I believe that year so far has the best percentage of cars crankwalking. My suggestion would to just rebuild it and put some nice upgraded bearings. I am going through this right now and am almost finished. I hope to be done next week. I know Brian (Blackcrow64) is going through a 6 bolt swap now that his 7 bolt crankwalked.
And Welcome to AF.

Its still a 7 bolt, regardless of percentages. If it were me, I would go through with the 6 bolt swap. They can be on the spendy side, but not having to worry about CW is worth it to me. You can do the swap pretty cheap if you do it yourself, otherwise SBR makes a kit but its super expensive. If I were in your shoes, I would get yourself a 6 bolt and do a minor rebuild and drop 'er in. Thats just me though, and if you arent planning on modding it another 7 bolt is maybe the better way to go.

I agree with Dustin, buy a 6-bolt, give it a nice tune-up/refresh and drop that baby in. You'll never have to worry about crankwalk again.

i might not be right on this correct me if im not but my understanding it that the 2g auto did not have crank walk. so if you wanted you could try and find an engine out of an auto. im not possitive so make sure first. i know where that is one with 90k miles on it and a rebuild head for like 500. but i have a 6 bold engine in my talon and it works great. you might even take a 6 bolt motor and put 7 bold pisons and rods in it that way you get the best of both worlds.

I'm not sure how accurate that is. I've actually never really thought about how many of the crankwalked victims have been auto or not... As for the swap. If you putting a 6 bolt in then don't do the 7 bolt pistons and rods. The better combination would be the 7 bolt pistons with 6 bolt rods in a 6 bolt block. Of course the rods have to be machined some to correctly fit, but it is better than using just 7 bolt pistons and rods.

You cant put 7 bolt rods in a 6 bolt engine, different crank journal sizes. Not to mention, once you pay for the machining to get the pistons on the rods, you might as well have just bought forged shit. Might as well just go 1g rods and some Ross or Wiseco pistons and not have to fuck with machinists.

yea that works to. i see alot of people that put second gen pisons in 6 bold motors. better compression. but as far as the maschineist im not sure. it might not be worth your wild. just giving ideas.

Ok, bryan, it's bolT, not bolD. I just wanted to clear that up because it was really bugging me. Anywho, that's incorrect about auto's not crankwalking. I've heard of just as many autos as manuals that crankwalk. They may not walk as quickly as the manual cars do because of less stress from lack of a clutch, but they do walk. And the common "cheap" upgrade for 6-bolt upgrades is a nice set of 6-bolt "big" rods with 7-bolt pistons. 7-bolt rods will not fit like Dustin said, but the 6-bolts will and go nicely with the 7-bolt piston.

sorry about the typo. but yea that is what i ment. not rods just pistons. about the crank walk that just what one my buddys said. i dont know i dont mess with the 7 bolt motors.
