I own a 91 Ford Escort LX and the reverse lights dont come on. How do I replace them? And what else could it be? All the other lights come on fine. Please help.

If both of the reverse lamps fail to illuminate, it is possible that the
MLP sensor or Range sensor has failed. It is mounted on the transmission and directs voltage to the reverse lamps when in the Reverse gear. If you need further assistance, reply to this thread and I will try to help you.

Good Luck

That sounds like it could be it, I cant say for sure if it is the bulbs because they are both out, it sounds like that could be it, can you tell me how to replace that part?

Find the component on the transmission where the shift cable attaches.
It should have,(but not limited to), 2 wires on it that control the reverse lamps. There should be a black wire with a yellow stripe and then a red wire with a dark green stripe. Once you find this component, just remove the screws/bolts and replace.

Good luck!

I have the same problem as the original poster (both reverse lights not working but all bulbs are good) AND my center roof mount reverse lights are the same (not working but both small bulbs are good). My car is a 1997 Taurus wagon and strangely I have noticed that when the rear hatchback is open causing the rear cargo/interior light to go on the center brake lights also illuminate but only very, very dimly.

Any thoughts out there?

The hot wire to the mercury switch on the inside light is shorting out on the hot wire to the center brake lights. Frequently the wires run inside the rocker panels and moisture will get in there and cause what you describe. Go to the Taurus forum. The moderator there will help you out. He's very knowledgable.
