Programming Integrated Universal Remote

Having trouble programming the Integrated Universal Remote Control (1999 740il) to link with a Craftsman 315 mhz garage door opener. I cleared out the memory by holding the outer channel keys until the lights flashed. I then tried to program by pressing a channel key and craftsman remote button simultaneously. Cleared out memory again and pressed the 'learn' button the overhead garage door unit and then tried to program by pressing the channel key three times. Was not successful with either method. Anyone know how to make this work?
