Throttle position sensor-Testing & Replacing for 99+ Grand Am's

Testing the Throttle position sensor(TPS).

It is the same procedure for both the 4cyl(2.4L) and the V6(3.1 & 3.4L).

The TPS plug is located on the side of the TB.
The right side on your 2.4L(as with the v6).

- First check the plug and wires for breaks or being loose.

- Next check the Voltage supply and ground circuits from the PCM.
- Connect the positive lead of a voltage meter(grey/black #1) wire terminal,
and the negative lead to the black(#2) wire at the connector.
- Turn the key "on" the voltage should be 5 volts.
-If its incorrect check the wires to the PCM.
-If they are in good shape you'll hav to hav the dealer(or other qualified tech) check the PCM.

- To check the TPS operations, reconnect the plug.
- Back probe the Dark blue wire(#3) on the TPS plug,
connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the probe.
-And the Negative lead to a good engine ground.

- Turn the key On.
- With the throttle closed the voltage should read about 0.6 volts.
- Slowly open the throttle, the voltage should increase smoothly to aprox 4.5volts at WOT.

- If the test reads incorrect, replace the TPS.

Removal--
- First disconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Disconnect the plug connector.
- To remove the TPS requires two torx screws removed.
-- Visible in the pic linked above.
- remove old "O" ring.

- To install reverse procedures, be sure to install a new "O" ring,
and apply a small amount of clean engine oil to the "O" ring.
