I have recently aquired a 94 Chevy Lumina 3.1 Euro.

Can not get to go in reverse?

What is the problem and how do I fix?

What's it do?

Slip, whine, grind, bump, anything?

If you give it a lot of gas, does it try to creep?

More info please.

It not likely to be anything you'd fix yourself, unless you know your way around a tranny, in which case you wouldn't be asking what it could be;)...but I'll try to help...

There's no difference between park, neutral, or reverse. You can step on the gas and the car makes the same noise in all three postions. You don't feel any sort of shifting (as you would feel when you put into drive).

Hmmm.

Kinda strange...you'd pretty much need to have hydraulic pressure readings to see what's happening (or not happening) when it's put in reverse....if it was mine I might try dismantling the valve body and see if I could find something stuck or someplace where pressure was blowing off..

How's the fluid look anyway? Burnt up, or clean?

Was it this way when you bought it, or just happened suddenly?

I'd recommend to check if the shift cable really works - ask a friend to change the gear and observe the lever on the tranny - if it really moves from P to D through R and the R is not switched on, then it is not the problem you can fix.

I'd also recommend to use the jack to hang one wheel - in this case you won't spoil anything.

P.S. I meant "not spoil anything if you start to experiment when the engine is running".
It's pretty safe to check the link between the "stick" and the lever simply when the key is in the ignition lock and turned to run position but the engine isn't working.
