Has anyone tried installing the big 1989 to 1993 Caprice 9C1 (Police package) alternator on their pick up? Looks like it would work if you use the cast aluminum power steering pump/alternator bracket from the Caprice, cut off the top of the rear steel alternator bracket on the truck that goes up from the exhaust manifold/power steering pump and use the rear alternator brace from the Caprice which is a round steel brace that also is connected to the exhaust manifold. Another reason to use the Caprice rear brace is that the 9C1 alternators are about 1" thicker from front to back than the truck alternator. Also the adapter brackets that are used on the PS/alternator bracket on the Caprice can't be bolted to the truck casting because the long alternator bolt on the truck goes from back to front and the Caprice it's from front to back i.e. the truck casting is tapped at the front and the Caprice bracket is tapped at the back, thus the front hole on the Caprice is a clearance hole for the bolt to pass through into the adapter. Or, after all that typing, were the large 9C1 type alternators an option on the trucks? The 9C1 alternators are usefull if you're running a stereo with large amps as they make major amperage at idle.
