I joined your club. That car is awesome.
Black 1990 GTR, it looks brand new, only 33k on the clock. I swear this car drives like it just rolled off the showroom floor. Right now it has about 380hp, which is only a matter of time before that goes up. Brand new clutch, turbos, about 10k in receipts. I can not wait to bring it back to the states.

if i were you i'd stay at a constant 400 flywheel hp, i wouldn't want to go up too 600 or over i mean 400 is fine for me and with big huge turbos spool up takes a while and with my t25's it take's just a few minutes and i'm ready to go by the way my turbo's were updated and my internal's were balanced and blueprinted on my r34 that's why the dial up is 400 now my 400r come's with the internal's worked on already so i really didn't have to worry about hey skylineusa have i seen you at gtr.co.uk in the forum's i'm pretty sure since someother dude has your username and has a mustang and live's in england too.

Evo,
I plan on keeping the HP street friendly. I have the Mustang for those 1/4 mile runs, not to mention it a lot cheaper to buy parts for the Stang.
R33,
You have no idea how impressed I am about this car. Like sami mentioned, the quality in the GTRs are out of this world. And you are right I will not regret it. I am just mad at myself for taking this long to purchase one, but in the same breath I would not have this one if I had not waited. For as pld as this car is, it is in awesome shape. I you look down the sides of this car it is as straight as a mirror.
R34,
Pics will be on the way,:)
Mrsky,
I would hate to be you. Having to wait to drive your car must be very painfull.

So it looks like you like the car. So when I say you have to drive one to appreciate it truely, would I be correct? The reason why I am asking is all the people who are so eager to criticize GT-R just by looking at numbers and yet have never driven one. I've always said to go and drive one and then get back to me.
What all is done to it? What turbos? When are you coming back to States?

I don't have to go back for a while mid '05, but more than likely yes we will. Right now the car has brand new GTR R34 turbos on it, boost controller, new clutch, clarion sound system, security system that you have to plug in two keys into the dash before you can put your key into the car to start it, extra set of 3 peice race rims valued at $1500, a lo-jac, exuast upgrade, and suspension upgrades.

Sami,
Yes, its a different type of power. My Stang is faster, but the ride quality, and handling of the GT-R with the turbo power make it a much better ride.
I am going to keep both of them for a while, but in the end the GT-R will probably be my wife's car  Funny thing about that is, she wanted nothing to do with my GTR infactuation, then she took a ride in ours, and know she is hooked.
I am hoping to sell the Stang, and getting me a R33 GTR. We will see.
Oh, yes the car is Awesome:D

To add to that, you're still in the mild modification stages with your Godzilla. If you're looking to mod it more, I would look at Australian or Japanese markets as UK seems to be quite expensive too.

That is why I would get the R33 for wife as she might not like the ride once you're done with your modified car, and I would definately choose the R32 for mods. Once you have a twin plate clutch, high lift cams etc. she might not like it that much anymore... ;)

Mods, those I have to list later but to give a little idea, I'm running 2530's with 272 cams. Did try to dyno it but it jumped off the 4w dyno. I'll try it again when I get back to US, hopefully with more luck on a 2w dyno. I'm hoping it is in the 550whp range but should be at least 500whp.

i can be here all night just telling you stories abut my 400r but if you think that this car can be highly tuned your in for a big mistake well let me explain when i first got my 400r i had big plan's for it you know i was thinking 800 bhp at the time and i called everywhere for part's so i later contacted some of my friend's to see if they could find some part's luckily i struck the pot of gold and i found all the electronic's and a greddy t78 as if you didn't know and well i thought there would be a huge increase in hp but it only got bumped up too 450 bhp of course this car had a steady 318 flywheel hp and the thing is i did not need no balancing or blueprinting cause it was already done by nissan and this engine had great spool but now i realize that i prefer my r34 you would understand why, here let me give you a performance wise example this is a simple question:Why didn't the 400r's ever compete in the jgtc championship's why did they choose a standard n1 gtr? maybe because the engine was already tuned to the max remember 400hp yup i rather get my r34 with it's standard turbo than have my 400r it is basically the standard r33 gtr n1 except for the exterior enhancement's and engine tune-up's.jgtc need gtr's in the steady 500 bhp range and the 400r just coouldn't cut it.whem i'm beat.see ya

Thats interesting. So what your getting at is the 400R is one of those cars that comes from the factory in a high state of tune and squeezing more power out of it is a harder task then getting power from somthing in a lesser state of tune, say a standard GTR RB26?

Sure i think some pic's would be in the state of order but i have tried posting pic's and it say's something like not valid gif file whatever that mean's i'll try to post some up and maybe when i have some webspace meaning that i'll have a homepage i might be able to post them there and then you guy's can check it out it's only fair for me to show you skyline fanatic's some pic's of the car so i'll try my best. Also it's true it is very difficult for me to squeeze out more power because the car already came highly tuned and i hate to say that the 400r has 50 bhp more than my gtr r34 but yet the r34 in 0-60 is very quick my car is doing it under 4 seconds for sure remember i got's myself one of them plasticky thingy speed timer g force thingy which tells you 0-60 and 1/4 quater mile times.yup it's quicker and i'm on of the lucky one's as you would say i mean out off 44 gtr r34 n1's i got me one of them yeah it's one of those thing's that just happen for no reason right.i would have been happy with a r34 gts i mean it's a skyline but i got the n1 and i realized 2 week's after driving the car i was saying to my self hey the previous owner probably modified this car and that's why i got so much carbon fiber on it.there was no n1 badges so how could i tell and i had never had a r34 before so how did i know it was a n1 i just thought it was a standard one i mean i had never had one but as i popped the hood to see what i could find i looked at the chassis no. and my jaw dropped:eek2: and i almost had an attack or something my heart started pumping i mean i knew what a n1 was but how could i possibly believe that i was a proud owner of a bayside blue n1 gtr i was stunned i couldn't belive it and after that i got a little paranoid, well maybe alot because i thought of people scratching my paintjob or keying it so i alway's would park my car as far away as possible the only thing is that it would stand out and people would notice that lonely r34 sitting in the parking lot so people would decide to park their cheap civic's next to mine i personally got a civic but that's not important right now. Then the would open the door's and dent my car for no apparent reason so what i would do is just key their car cause i knew that that scratch wasn't there before and then i would just leave of course i'm an adult and shouldn't be doing but damnit he started it first see how childish i can be at times.See ya Dave

Rust repairs, yep. I just finished the bonnet, and most of the boot:) tire wells are next.
I had to use fiberglass for the hood, I do not have a welder that can do aluminum, the trunk I hand cut metal and welded it in. It so wet here, that I have to wait a few days between paint and block sanding. I have just some minor parts to fix on the trunk, actually, bat all in all its done. The rear tire well is pretty bad, that will take me a couple of days to fix. Its more the weather than anything else, wet and cool.
Thank you about the cars, I try to stay on top of both of them, but its getting harder. I have some stuff I have been meaning to install for the stang, but other things keep poppin up.

Tony,
Sorry to hear about the rust. I went through that same deal on every Mustang I owned. All of them were 5-8 years old when I bought them. New England winters took their toll. Every one of them had rust along the door bottoms and under the spoiler on the hatch. Two of them had rust along the bottom of the rear window, on the hatch. My first one had a rust along the front of the hood like your GT-R. I repainte the first two myself, the last one I just did some touch up due to lack of proper tools. Good luck with the repairs, the humidity and cool temp mus play havoc with drying times. Watch that rust it's like cancer, unless you cut it all out, it comes right back! ;)
So the Skyline has an aluminum hood? Huh? And you say it oxodized badly. Who would have thought... I guess I figured aluminum would hold up pretty good away from salt water. Oh well, best of luck. It looks like you have a pretty good handle on things from the pictures!

You could be right, I just went in the garage to check it out. I only did a weight and sound check (pretty much all you can do in those conditions), it is quite light for that size of a bonnet and I also found this from SDU: http://forums.skylinesdownunder.co.nz/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1593&highlight=aluminium+bonnet

Tony,
The only reason I brought up the rust is that I've had it come back a few times. I finally understood why when I took some classes in metalurgy and strenghts of materials in college. With most sheet steels, ranging from car sheet metal to ships hulls, the sheets or plates are made from folding and pressing ignots of steel. In the process you end up with a multi-layered product. Once rust starts it is easy for the rust to migrate along the stratus of these layers. Therefore grinding doesn't always get the inner layers of rust. Just my 2 cents worth. Hopefully all will go well for you.
Sami,
Good way to check if a material is aluminum, is to use a magnet. If the magnet does not stick, then the sheet metal is non-ferrous, and most likely aluminum.
Al

The problem was I couldn't find anything magnetic. I even tried to find the old car speakers... :)
One thing I'm thinking of, speaking of rust, is that they must be galvanized (not the aluminium but the steel touching it). Wait a second, aluminium and steel, does that rust? I had my fair share of metallurgy in college (I'm a robotics engineer) but I'm trying to do my best to forget. Correct me if I'm wrong but aluminium doesn't react with steel and the steel therefore does not rust.
I remember a friend of mine, who had no clue about chemistry, wanted to fix his rusty fenders. We both were working in a steel mill at the time (summers off from college to earn some beer money) and he had a "brilliant" idea. He was going to make them from the stainless steel leftovers. He actually managed to weld them into his car, and despite my warnings didn't take them off. You can imagine what the car looked like after a while...but he did have shiny rust free fenders... :D

He actually managed to weld them into his car, and despite my warnings didn't take them off. You can imagine what the car looked like after a while...but he did have shiny rust free fenders... :D

That is funny:)
As for the rust coming back, if it does I would be amazed, since I spented about 2 hours on each spot. Then sprayed self etching primer. I normal do not have it coming back, but then again I am in England now.:)
I am pretty sure your hood, and 1/4s are aluminium, sami:)
HellBent used a school word, non-ferrous:D

Sami,
Good discussion. You are bringing me back to the old college days. They are much more rewarding in my memories than my driving a desk today!;) (I have a BS in Marine Engineering, but now the Navy is sending me to be a Meteorologist, go figure!:jump: )
Galvaniation uses zinc as the coating over the steel, and aluminization uses aluminum over steel. Both zinc and aluminum oxidize more quickly than steel, but zinc oxide and aluminum oxide form a layer that is actually harder than the un-oxodized zinc or aluminum. The oxidized layer resists further oxidization and protects the steel beneath. You see aluminized steel mostly on exhaust systems. I am not sure if this because it is cheaper.
Sounds like your freind turned the rest of his car into a sacrificial anode. Great for the fenders, kind of tough on the less noble metals!;)
Tony,
Good luck on the repairs. When do you go to paint?

Yeah, and you use chrome to make stainless steel. My home is close to one of the worlds largest chrome mines, that's why there is a steel mill so close as well.
What I was first concerned with was the same reaction that those stainless fenders did do the rest of the car. If you have steel and aluminium connected (not aluminium coated steel) and both are in touch with oxygen, will the steel rust?

Sami,
Theoretically, the aluminum will oxodize before the steel. The aluminum is the more reactive metal and will give up an electron before the steel, especially when in a true galvanic cell. However, merely conected and exposed to the atmosphere may show in-exact results. You may get corrosion on both, due to not having a good electrolyte solution surrounding both parts.
I may not be 100% accurate on this as I haven't taken chemistry in a number of years!;)

If aluminium does not rust, whats all that white stuff on my hood? :)
The car will go to paint, when I get off my lazy butt and find a paint store. I will spay it in my garage, when it get a little warmer, so I am looking at June.

You just got too excited when you finally got a GT-R. Should have cleaned that when it wasn't too late... :)

Aluminum doesn't rust, it oxidizes! It's kind of like heroes...they don't die, they just fade away.
