Bad whell bearings

Hello to all,

Just today I went to my Toyota dealership regarding my loud muffler issue. I turns-out that it is indeed the exhaust pipe between my cat and the muffler has a rusted hole in it. Parts are on order and plan to have it repaired Monday.

Another issue came up. It seems my new tires are noisey too so the dealership looked into it and they said the front left bearings are bad and needs replacement. Can bad bearings make that drowning loud tires noise? :screwy: Kinda like a whine. Hard to describe but that's what it sounds like.

Anyway I gave permission to have these issues taken care of but the parts needs ordering. Don't know if these are genenric OR original OEM parts from Toyo. Only 800 bucks.:banghead: :grinyes:  :2cents: :2cents: :2cents: :frown: :frown: :frown:

After these are handled NOW they say my water pump is leaking and my drive belts are cracked. They want me to swap out the timing belt and the oil seals. Just another 1000 bucks.:banghead:  :screwy: :shakehead :frown: :2cents: :2cents: :2cents: :2cents:

There goes my tax return for sure and some.

You could always say.........no.........and do it yourself.

If the noise in your wheels started the same time you changed your tires, the odds are the noise comes from your tires and not the wheel bearings.

Also, if the water pump is leaking, make sure you make them show you the puddle or drips. Are you loosing antifreeze faster than normal? If no drips or loss of antifreeze, tell them you'll think about it.

Wow, go to a Midas or something. They said they'd do my wheel bearing for under 200 if i remember right, maybe 250. Sure wasn't 800. Either way, wasn't low enough for me to pay them to do it. I'm with Brian though, might not be your wheel bearing at all. Take it to another place with free inspections (Some Midas, CarX...), tell them something is wrong with your brakes (and it makes a sound). If your wheel bearing is going bad, they'll notice it without you telling them. Then you know if its really a problem.

Timing belt for $1000? Again, go find another shop. Even the "average" ones won't say more than 600 for all that stuff. I understand not wanting to do the timing belt yourself (I sure didn't), but shop around. I got my belt, seals, water pump, power steering belt, valve cover gasket, transmission gasket all done for $410. Shopping around helps!

Brian R.,

Thank you for your reply. I can't remember if the old tires caused a noise. I don't believe so but I can be wrong. In either case I have a new set on now and with any hope the new bearings will make my happy. Besides I already paid for the new bearings so I have to put them on anyway.

Regarding my water pump issue. They offered to shot me the leak but I passed on it because years ago my mom and I spent money to put one in along with a new timing belt. To my knowledge it has not beaked badly as I see no drip marks on the cement floor. I personally think it might be a slow leak and not a major one otherwise I'd see it for sure on the floor. Besides that for now I can't spend the money yet cuz I haven't paid my taxes yet nor my yearly insurance. Repairing these items will happen but not right a way.

Wheel bearings can make noise similar to tire noise.

I had experience spending a lot of time tracking down a wobble noise from the tire. I replaced 4 tires (it's time to replace anyway), and the noise was still there. I rotated the tire and the noise came from the same place.

Finally a tire shop "spin" the tire on the vehicle and showed me that the same tire rotates on one spindle is smooth but on the one where the noise came out is shaky. Replacing the bearing solved the problem.

Good luck.

ProMan,

Yeah it was the bearing after all:grinyes: The rusted exhaust piper was replaced also so everythings water under the bridge now. Just one less things to worry about.

Now all I need to change is the driving belts, water pump and timing belt. Oh well just another 6-700 bucks.:banghead: :2cents: :2cents: Maybe I'll buy the parts and hunt for a private mechanic to install them.:naughty:

Glad your original problem is now solved. I would suggest, if you are going to have this additional work done, let the shop provide their own parts. You will not save that much, if anything at all, by supplying your own parts and you will be in a difficult situation if there is a problem with any of the parts down the road. You would be responsible for the labor to remove and reinstall a defective part. With timing belts and waterpumps, the labor is the major part of the expense. Let the tech be responsible for the complete job by supplying the parts himself. IMHO.

Geez!!! OK, that might explain a little of it. On the othe hand, mine is a 2K with 190K on it. I've only changed the belts once and no water pump. I notice around here that it seems to leak water, but I just took it on a trip to Fla and back and didn't loose a bit of water. I use Walmart 5-30 and what ever filters. Change the oil about every 4-6K and might use a half quart inbetween. It's a V6 5sp. Seems to be getting a little loose on the road, so I'm wondering of the shocks need to be replaced. The front right seems to rattle over the bumps. Wish they were rebuildable like my motorcycle suspension, I'd do it in a heartbeat!!!!

EA6BMECH,

It's claimed that I have a leak in my water pump. I admit the last time it was changes was at the 180K interval but that was a good 5 years ago. During that time my mom drove the car very little and if she put on 5 miles in a week that was lucky. Now that it's only about 217K they claim the seal is going. AND of course the timing belt should be swaped out too!:nono: I could be wrong but I think it's just salesmanship on the part of the dealership.

Regarding the shocks mine has never been replaced nor has it been necessary. The dealership told me that as long as it's not leaking fluid they're fine. At the current mileage my suspension appears to be still good to go!!! Either case I'm due for an oil change in a couple of months anyway.

For the money I've spent on this car I can afford to wait.:2cents: :2cents: :2cents: :2cents:

Tid bits:

My 87 with the 2 ltr 3sfe has 250K miles on it and still has the original water pump and thats after 3 timing belt changes.

If your dealer is telling you don't change the struts untill they leak, thank the powers that be that you have an honest dealership whos not out to empty your wallet. They are rare. You are a lucky man indeed. Cheers!

RIP,

It depends on which service advisor one gets at the same dealership. In either case I don't have the money anyway to further these suppose leaks/concerns/timing belt/pump so I just have to roll the dice until taxes are paid.

I hate thinking about the idea of changing all four struts/shocks cuz I know that'll cost big time.:banghead: :2cents: :2cents: :2cents:
