What is your favorite anti virus software? What are your likes and dislikes about them?

McAfee just happens to be the choice of my company, which I had to support for a number of years. I just got used to it and feel comfortable with it :)

I like AVG. Haven't had an issue yet while running it and the best part of all it's FREE. (Free is good.)

Using NOD32

I wouldn't really say any antivirus program is my "favorite", but AVG has been good to me and anyone else I tell to get it. I also hear good things about Trend Micro's antivirus software, but have no experience with it.

thank you. Is this something that can/ should be run without another anti-virus software?

It is best not to run more than one, they may conflict with one another.

What I mean is: does it do a sufficient job by itself?

I use Bit Defender's free online scanner. Works better than MacAfee, Norton, Trend Micro, and AVG. Avast is also a good option.

McAfee owns your soul. Or I'm used to it and know how to trick it into doing what I want it to do...one of the two. Either way, I like it.

Yes. It does a very god job on my computer. While it is recommended to only run one antivirus program on your computer, you can have more than one adware/spyware program. This is a good thing to utilize on your computer to get rid of stuff that can slow your computer down, and cause other problems. I run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot S&D, and Windows Defender. Along with that I run CCleaner. A good site to check out for free downloads of programs like this and other types of free programs is www.filehippo.com .

Not exactly real-time protection though. I would rather the virus not get in at all, rather than remove it at a later time when I feel like doing a scan.

Norton and McAfee are rubbish, I would never use or recommend them. Everything I've heard about BitDefender has been reasonably good, so that's the best of the ones listed.

However, my personal recommendation would be NOD32, Trend Micro or Kaspersky.

Been using Panda with no problems so I figure it must be working like it should. Cost 50 bucks a year though....

Nope, but I've never gotten a virus. Just be smart about what you do on the internet and you don't have to worry about it, but that is why I suggested Avast if you need realtime.

I just wanted to post back that I tried out NOD32 like Oz suggested, and this program seems to work very well. Not the most friendly interface, but it will keep your computer clean and protected. If your interested in trying it, a free trial is available. Just do a google search.

IMO Avast.

I vote AVG because of the better heuristic abilities. In plain terms, it can better catch a virus that has not been identified yet.

Yeah, Avast.

A lot of people have a stigma against free software, but AVG and Avast picked up things that Norton never did.

A couple of years ago when I still had Norton on my system, I ran a regularly scheduled scan of my system. At the time I also had AVG. I remember during the scan I was surfing the 'net and a Norton window appeared and said that a trojan horse had been detected. It further instructed me to use AVG to remove it. Huh? I thought that Norton would remove it at the end of the scan as that's what I paid for when I renewed my subscription. I never heard of one software telling the customer to use a competing software to do something like removing something dangerous on the computer. In fact, nobody else I spoke to since then has ever heard of something like that occuring. I guess it's good to see Norton has such faith in AVG .

lol. Plus there's the whole space issue. Isn't Norton quite the hard drive hog?

All current anti virus programs use heuristic analysis.

Norton is quite the hard drive hog, but I would be more concerned about it's memory usage - 100mb+ after booting !!

I realize this, that's why I said *better*. :)
