Obtaining Codes for 2001 Malibu

Is there a way to extract the engine codes from a 2001 Malibu without an OBDII reader? I know that it can be done on some vehicles. Like a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee for example; you turn the key on and off and on the 5th time, you leave it on and the codes scroll across the odometer.

Any help would be appreciated.

As xeroinfinity said no magic buttons on them.
All 96 up are OBD11 and require a scanner to get OBD11 codes.
Some parts places do offer a free code checks.
But do not let them sell you parts until you check things out.
A code does not say replace the part it only says check it out.
Just get the code no and post it back here and someone will help you.

Usually the place that you go to can tell you what the code is.

I hope everything works out for you with your car. My advice for the future would be to go ahead and buy the scanner. When we went to look at the Malibu we have now we went ahead and bought the new scanner.

I have a Malibu 98 and yes I've had my share of issues, but I made a relationship with the folks at my local Advanced Auto and anytime I have issues they recommend all sorts of advice.
On the contrary, they scan my car should the stinkin Engine light come on for free. But like somebody said, let them scan, post the code and there's tons of help here.....I'm trying something that I read here at the moment and will know in the morning if all is well.
