'91 Blazer shuts off when in drive or when brakes are applied

One of my friends has a '91 Blazer that got broken into at her house. The person went haywire and just ripped the whole CD player out wires all sliced up and everything. She asked me to take a look at it. Basically this is the problem.

It starts, but when you hit the brakes or put it in drive, the car dies. It was working fine prior to it being broken into so I was thinking maybe it was maybe a wire that isn't making a good ground from the engine compartment running through the firewall and that maybe it got ripped loose during the break in?

Anyways, it was dark last night so I didn't get a chance to look at it too closely. Does anyone have any other ideas of what it might be? Any info would be appreciated.

Of course, I blame it all on the fact that it is a CHEVY. haha I'm a ford guy. :evillol:

Don't just start putting the wires together without a manual...you might be creating a direct short which will start the breakers to opening circuits and when they fail...dash fire(!!!).
I'd start taping up all the cut ends to try to avoid a dash fire then check the fuse box for blown fuses.

While it is running, is the CHECK ENGINE light on?

I imagine she has insurance and a police report was made, right? I would have it towed to a dealer and let the insurance company pay for repairs.

Liability only, insurance won't cover. It's a pretty beat up blazer, and if it was mine, I wouldn't pay the money to have a mechanic fix it. It does only have 107k miles on it though.

I took a look again tonight and it will idle and brake fine....given it is parked. Once in drive, then you hit the brakes, it cuts off. The check gauge light comes on. Gauges seem fine and I have checked all fluids.

Find the Assembly Line Diagnostic Link (ALDL) at the lower portion of the dash...it's the device for checking Trouble Codes. Maybe the computer "remembers" something to lead us to your problem. Jumper the 2 top right holes with a piece of wire or even a paper clip then turn the keyswitch on. The Check Engine light should flash once then 2 times...1-2 or what's refered to as a condition code 12 which is the computer's way of letting you know it's now in diagnostic mode and is preparing to flash more lights in 2 digit sequences. It'll flash each one including the aforementioned code 12 three times. After it gets through, it'll flash the code 12 again letting you know it's played all the stored codes.

check your insurance for comprehensive coverage, any agent that didn't include that is nuts. it only adds about $20 to the policy and covers you for teft, fire, window breakage and other non-collision accidents such as a tree falling on it. i actually read the fine print on my insurance and i'm pretty well covered except in the event of a "missle strike or other act of war". it actually said that.
