I had just finished installing new inner tie rods on my 1994 Silhouette and drove it for about three weeks when it started stalling. At first it started right up afterwards but eventually it wouldn't stay running, just crank, fire, and then die immediately. I did notice that that the voltage meter was very erratic and would go down then up to normal. Eventually it would go down to zero and then the car would stall again. After trying to start it again repeatedly the van wouldn't even crank. The battery is new, the alternator checked out OK, the starter is OK too. I get bright lights inside and out, radio, heater and everything electrical works fine. But when I turn the key now the dash dosen't light up, no click or any sound from starter, nothing. I also noticed when I turn the key a little back and forth that the dash lights and indicators light up and then die with the movement of the key but still no crank. Any thoughts anyone??? All of this happened in a matter of about one hour. :screwy:

Thanks!

It took me awhile to look at it. It got pretty cold up here this winter and I just let the van sit in the garage. Looked at it a few weeks ago and just started checking things out. The battery was fine, I crossed a screw driver between the solenoid and starter terminals and it cranked so that meant that the starter was good but maybe the solenoid was bad. But when I pulled a spark plug and held it against the block while I cranked it there was no spark but cranked just fine. I then thought that maybe the coil pack or module was bad. I bought a used one, ($25)), cleaned it up and installed it but nothing. I had the lights on while I cranked it and they did not get dim or go out. That told me that there was no power going to the solenoid. I thought the solenoid was bad so I bought a new one ($16) All the fuses were good and the fusible links weren't burned out. The radio, lighter, heater all worked it just wouldn't crank when I turned the key. The next thing I checked was the ignition switch, not the key and cylinder ignition, but the electrical switch mounted on the steering columm. I dropped the column and replaced the switch ($17) and it sounded like it wanted to start. Those switches are adjustable and sure enough, after I adjusted it, it started right up. It took six months and cost me $58.00 but I guess it was better than having the shop do it, right???

Thanks for the help whoever!

Oh yea, I did try cleaning that post off. I was hoping that was all that it was but no luck. Thanks Man!!
