did i throw a rod?

my car is kinda old (1991 honda crx) it has about 230000 miles on it.. and on the way home today it made a bad noise and then there was a knocking kinda noise.. i thought i broke a belt but i pulled over and looked at it. my 3rd plug wire was popped up off the spark plug socket so i pulled it off. it was broken and my spark plug was out of the socket. I don't know if its stripped out and it's night so i can't look at it right now but my friend told me to put a new plug in and see if it works.. i just need to know what to expect tomorrow when i go to fix it. what do i need to do and should i be looking for a new motor or car?

Kinda sounds like the plug just worked its way loose and popped, or maybe some debris got into tha cylinder like a broken piston or something.

i dont know if it matters, but more info never hurts.

i doubt that the plug would just "work its way out" unless it was really loose to begin with.
put another one in and try to run the engine.
if you threw a rod the engine will not even run and will probably not turn over.

I've seen it happen before, the plug just blows out of the hole, but is not damaged, at least not by an engine part. Someone just forgot to tighten that one. My guess is that you will be able to put a new one in, as long as the last thread on the head didn't go with the plug. Worst case, you'll have to run a hand tap down the plug hole.

but if you do that, you will have to be very careful not to get the metal shavings in the engine.

Most of the metal will come when the hole is opened up. The pan in this case is a soft aluminum. It would be a good idea to dump in a cheap quart of lighter oil to flush anything out after the hole is re-threaded.

i would also try a new plug..i hope you never stripped it..if so you might have to put helecoil in it....

OOPS, wrong post! I was following a stripped out oil pan elsewhere. Chances are good that a new SPARK plug will go right in.

well, i went the next morning and put the new plugs and wires on.. the hole wasn't stripped or anything and now it's running great.. my only real concern is the oil i saw in the first plug when i took it out.. i checked the new one and it seems fine after a couple days though.. i guess i just need to get it rebuilt if i want to keep my baby.. it's hard to get rid of a car no matter how dated it is when it gets 40+ miles per gallon..

the best i ever got was 52mpg
