Pollution equipment on 86 22R

I've got a 86 pickup with a 22R which I recently blew a head gasket in. I have it torn down and everything mics out good so I'm going to rreplace the timing chain and gaskets and put it back together. Wouldn't it run just as well if I took all the cannisters and 10+ feet of misc vacuum line out and simply ran two lines from the carb to the distributor?
Thanks
(Just want to clean things up a little)

The charcoal cannisters are part of the evap system and have no effect on performance, but do help the environment. Vapors (HCs) that vent from the gas (HC) tank and the float bowl of the carburetor go in to the charcoal cannister, then they go into the intake to be burned. Charcoal cannisters can only help fuel economy by collecting vapors (HCs). Hydrocarbons, HCs, is synonomous with fuel.
