the heater in my 93 lesabre switches from defrost to heat to vent all on its own or stays stuck in the vent position. It has a push button control panel and manual heat contol.

Because it's switching among three modes rather than two modes like mine did, this may not be relevant. But my 93, bless its heart, started losing control of the button settings and went into defrost with air conditioning on when it was warm enough for the compressor to trigger. At the same time the power door locks wouldn't work.
I'm sure it was the grounding of some of the under dash circuits. People comment about the ground busses getting corroded because of moisture on them from wet feet in snow climates and rain. You might try pulling and hitting and tugging on the one connector by the emergency brake to see if it makes and breaks contact and has any effect on your changes.

Do any other things not work right when this happens?

Jackpot. Start looking at that cluster wrapped in lots of electrical tape for the grounding buss.
