znc07,

Assuming your bad mileage is not with the air condition running I get the oil changed to perhaps a lighter weight oil. Recheck and fill your tires to the proper tire pressure and get the wheels realigned.

Your v-6 engine seems to be average for city driving. For myself I usually check my highway mileage first before wondering about city driving.

In my book the important items to keep up is:

1. keep the engine in tune
2. keep your oil fresh and change it when specified
3. keep your tires properly inflated.
4. Drive your car EASY
5. don't run the air conditioning unless absolutely necessary.

your engine is approved to use 5w-20 oil. thread is stickied to top of forum. should help mileage if you aren't already using this.

The TSB from Toyota in the post at the top of the forum says that it is.

well get this i paid 10g for my camry which is fully loaded w/ everything. so if i burn a lil bit more gallons of gas it shouldnt make more than 15 dollars worth of a difference in a month; multiply that for 12 months and that only is 180. so im only paying 180 bucks more than u so WHOS GETTING THE BETTER DEAL?!?!?!

well, I never said I had a 2003 4 cylinder Camry. all I said was the 2003 4 cylinder Camry would get better mileage. Calm down there chief. I was just kidding around. thats why I put the :dupe: icon at the end of my post. didn't mean to offend you.

Rimfire had great advice when he told you the best way to get the best mileage from your car was to keep the engine tuned up, keep the tires properly inflated, don't speed on the highway, and most important..... drive the car easy. avoid jackrabbit starts, coast to a stop when you can, and avoid long idling of the car engine.:2cents:

By the way, congrats on the great deal you got on your car.

Brings up a topic close to all of us. Both sides have valid arguements. A 6 vs 4cyl engine isn't going to cost much more over a years time to operate. Many take it for granted they will save hundreds because they are driving a 4 cyl car but, the numbers aren't really there as znc07 points out.

On the other hand if everyone drove a 4 instead of a 6 or 8 cyl, we wouldn't be under OPECS thumb, the middle east would no longer be a national interest that needs to be defended with American blood, and Mr Chavez in Venezuela would be out of the picture.

that is so true:lol: but how can we get everyone to drive a 4 cyl car and especially in tx where i live, where EVERYONE drives trucks!!!

Stop selling gasoline-powered trucks and only sell diesels.

It would have to be government mandated and that will never happen. The American public wouldn't stand for it.

I'd drive a diesel. Of course it wouldn't be as much fun, but I still have an I4 for better economy instead of a v6, so fun isn't on the top of my list.

I vaguely remember reading the report on a survey that said people didn't want diesels largely due to having the impression that they were dirty and expensive. Once they were told that they are not "dirty" and are significantly more fuel efficient, they changed their minds...Brian's point again, stupidity. Once our gas prices shoot over $5-6, they'll learn out of necessity, just like it is on the other side of the atlantic, then we will have a bunch more diesels to choose from!

Well, don't forget that with truck owners, many would prefer diesels for their torque, simplicity, reliability, mileage, and fuel flexibility. These are alot of positives for an alternative and robust technology.

Car owners are a totally different lot altogether (at least here in the US).

Yup, diesels are an alternative that helps in the long run. When I made my last post I was refering to the 4 vs 6 cyl issue. I forgot to include the quote.

Diesels are a viable alternative. Continuous upgrades have made them nearly as clean as gas engines but, they have a ways to go before the public as a whole can accept them. Problem is they are only a step to the "ultimate clean engine". They are not "THE" fix. Natural gas is another alternative but, there's that perceived explosive problem and the main problem with all fossil fueled engines - CO. Hydrogen appears to have the potential to beat that. It's on the horizon and none too soon.

Brian - Thanks for the Advisor tag.

My post about positive diesel attributes was mostly in response to znc07 post about everyone driving trucks in Texas, not your's RIP.

You're welcome. Keep up the good work.

Did you know that the gas you save probably will not make back the extra you pay for a hybrid?
I don't feel like doing numbers right now, but I saw an article either on Yahoo or on freep.com (free press). It will probably be a wash in the end, but at least you'll feel better about yourself. Of course tax breaks and such can change that significantly.

Hydrogen is the way to go. All the articles I've read indicate somewhat normal use of it (similar to hybrids a few years ago) around 2015. That is literally going to change the world, in just about every way you can imagine.

Cold Air Intake
K&N Filter
Oil Change
Keep RPMs low
basic tune up

I have a Automatic 03 Camry 4cyl, it has about 180-190hp and I get 27-28 mpg flooring it all the time. lol

I think this topic has gotten way too far away from the original discussion.
