Just dropped a grip replacing all brakes including the parking brake shoes and new rotors thinking this would solve my problem. while the truck did and does stop well, (a little smushy but I have heard this is common on these) I feel a depression on the pedal and the ever unique "ABS engaging sound" just before I come to a stop. It sounds like what it sounds like when you are trying to stop on ice but doesn't matter what surface I am on and it's not ice. Doesn't matter if I am hard braking, barely moving or what but almost every time it makes that ABS sound. Could I have a bad ABS sensor? Any others out there have a similar problem?

Welcome to AF. This has been a chronic problem on these trucks, one of the ft wheel speed sensors is usually the culprit causing premature abs engagement. There was a recall for this issue in states that use salt on the roads up in northern areas, other areas still experience can this. There is a procedure for cleaning the sensor mount surface then reinstalling the sensor. Of course only a scan with an abs function scanner will reveal the problem as it checks sensor inputs. You may still need a new bearing/sensor here also.

I had this exact same problem and fixed by replacing the speed sensor on the right front. Mine is a 1999 Yukon.
Is it possible that the constant engaging of the abs system could introduce air into the lines giving a very soft pedal. I took it to the mechanic yesterday and he noted the following: clamped brake lines at each wheel, still soft pedal; removed master cylinder to check for leaks, none found; blocked off master cylinder, had good pedal. Diagnosis - either there is a large amount of air in the lines or the abs unit is bad.
Anyone have any insight into these comments?

I have had the same problem for a while on my 2000 denali. Gm says my vin # not included in recall although i have the exact problem that the recall was initiated for. I live in the snowbelt (ontario, canada). I have had Gm dealer look at speed sensors and test drive my denali. Even they agree it should be covered under the recall due it being the exact problem and due to the danger of driving the vehicle with this condition.
Also dealer informed me of a case right now where one of their customers were pulling up to a Tim Hortons and the truck did not stop due to ABS problem and he went thru the front glass of the building!!!
one year ago, I purchased a Dodge ram quad 4x4, Last month a chrysler SRT8-300C and my wife has had a honda for just over a year now. I'm age 35 and the way that GM customer Assistance has treated me I will never go back. I was a loyal customer purchasing many GM products but, not anymore....there are too many cars/trucks on the market now a days to be putting up with their crappy service/ attitude. They have lost out on my purchases for the next 30+ yrs. of my life
