Just some info for others out there.
I own a 2003 suburban and recently had the "service 4wd" light come on intermittanly. The dash mounted 4wd switch would show just the red light and would not shift to any of the positions selected. After reading other posts about suspect 4wd switches I tried a new switch from www.gmpartsdirect.com (http://www.gmpartsdirect.com) p/n 15136039 which is effective for 03-04. After replacing the switch I have had no more problems. If any one else is having this problem I hope this helps.

I ran into same problem with my 4wd service light. I read other postings about it, lots of problems with units I see. I read that you can take the shift module out of dash, dash cover removes easy, and so does unit. Take the cover off of the module and look at the solder on the circuit board going to the fingers where you plug the wire harness. My unit had weak solder and not a good connection. I added solder and put back together. Works now with no problems.

My Service 4wd msg just came on (02 'burb). No lights on any of the buttons and I'm stuck in 2wd - and getting more snow tonight. O the irony!

Does anyone know the part number or how I can find it for the 4wd switch for an 02 suburban?

My suburban did the same and the dealer replace the switch on the dash, no more problem here either.

I have an 03 Silverado, Service 4WD Light on. The 1st time the mice chewed the wires by the transfer case. Fixed the problem once the wires were fixed. The 2nd time I checked all fuses, OK, checked all wiring OK, getting power everywhere. I pulled the 4wd switch out, popped it apart since many guys suggested the connectors are seperated and to put a drop of solder on it. Not my problem all my lights were burned so my switch was fried. I bought a new switch $88.00 and nothing worked so I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes and it reset the system and everything is OK. So try the battery disconnect first and save some money but in my case my switch was fried anyway. Good Luck
