Another leak...

Ever since I got my 3K, the level in the power steering has gone down slowly, so I would have to cap it off once in a while. However, this past week I can hear the whine from the pump and notice the level going down much faster. This morning I noticed a small puddle next to my front left (driver) wheel. It was clear but there was also like a milky yellow in it as well, oily in texture. I know power steering fluid is clear with a slight bluish tint to it so I don't know why it was like a rust color but anyway, I know I'm leaking fluid somewhere, but like some, I suck at finding leaks without knowing the first place to look. So if anyone could give me any direction that would be awesome.

Start around the pump? Where it is I dont remember lol.

Just follow the lines. You will come across the leak eventually.

BTW DO NOT use regualr pwer sterring fluid. Use ATF. Not only is it better than regular power steering fluid as is, but its whats recommended in the manual.

Well I have been using stop leak to cap off when it gets low but I'll remember to use ATF when I flush the system. BTW I'm pretty sure I found the leak. I don't know much about the power steering system, but I found where the driver side tie rod connects to the rack?(I think it's the rack), I see fluid dripping there. I dried it off just to see if it got wet again and it did. What would I have to do to fix that?

Well I have to bring this thread back, because my problem has gotten worse. I was driving today after replacing a bad alternator, when all of a sudden my steering got really hard and would occasionally loosen until I finally lost almost all power steering. The pump (although refilled some) is no longer whining because it's not making any noise. Following questions...

How can I diagnose weather or not my power steering pump has gone bad?

I know about one leak on the rack... is it possible to eplace seals or do I have to purchase a new rack?

Is it not a good idea to drive the car, even if the pump is useless?

i know several guys who have deleted the power steering pump to save weight. i'm pretty sure you only receive aid from the power steering pump at low speeds, like turning from a stop or taking a corner below 15 mph. so other than these situations, it should be fine to drive with the power steering pump not working. however, don't quote me on that. you might call a local dealer and just ask.

Its always assisting no matter what the speed. Its just without power steering its much easier to steer at speed than say trying to pull into or out of a parking space.
