Hello everyone, I am having a problem with my 98' Pontiac Gran Prix GTP. It has about 97,000 miles and does have the supercharger. I changed the oil in both the supercharger AND the engine about a month or so ago. I bought the car about a year ago. I have not been really tough on it, but who knows about the previous owner. I have not had any problems with it until now.
Today I was driving my car going about 35 MPH, and all the sudden my check oil light came on and then a few seconds later the car shut off. I coasted into a parking lot and sat there a while. I checked my oil and it was low, so I called a friend to get me and we went and bought oil. The car was a quart low on oil so I filled that and sat there a while waiting for the oil to settle. After a few minutes I tried starting the car, it started but sounded really bad. The noise was like a clunking noise and was pretty loud, it wasn't really a grinding noise. I went to shut the engine off immediatly (after about 5 seconds), but it almost felt like the engine was shutting off before I turned the key.
The check enging light never turned on so I dont know if it will throw any codes or not. After the traffic slows down later tonight I might tow it to Advanced Auto to see if they can check for codes. Other than that I have no idea what to do. I am hoping that its not engine internal problems but who knows, I have the worst of luck when it comes to my cars. Maybe its the supercharger?
Has anybody had these problems or anybody know what it sounds like. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Matt

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it sounds like you blew it up. You probably have an oil leak and ran it too low, causing damage to the crank bearings. The noise you are hearing is either a rod knocking, or a main journal bearing is spun.

Ok maybe I have some better news. I went back to start the car again and it starts just fine but it wants to die within 5 or 10 seconds of running. The loud noises that I heard earlier today are no longer there. However, I can keep the car running as long as I give it gas. The throttle has to be at about 50 percent or so but it runs and sounds fine. From standing by the engine when it is being revved, the engine sounds like normal. No more clunking or anything. It is almost as if it is not getting enough gas or maybe like a Throttle Positioning Sensor. I am not sure if the EGR could be the problem. But since it starts I think its safe to eliminate the crank positioning sensor being bad, I think.
I bought a fuel filter that I am going to change as soon as I can tow it back home later tonight. I have a feeling that it wont be that simple.
Does it sound like any problems that anybody else has had. Or any thoughts as to what other sensors or anything else I can check. Thanks for the help, Matt.

I had what sounds like this same problem with my '97 gtp a month or so after i bought it, same thing you said the engine would start and then want to die but would go if you gave it gas. I got it scanned and one or more of the spark plugs were misfiring so i changed the plugs and wires and it has run good ever since. It had 98,000 miles on it when this happened and since you have 97k it sounds like it might be the same problem. If nothing else works, i would suggest doing the same.
